Just used my new omega pure badger brush. When I was making some lather from soap I noticed that it stunk, overpowered the citrus smell of the soap. When I went to squeeze out by hand the remaining soap from the brush I noticed the soap was a grayish color and smelled pretty bad, is this normal for a new badger and if so how do I clean it to remove the awful smell?
when i get a new badger brush, i shampoo it well. i use a coconut shampoo and then rinse and then shampoo and rinse again. this will usually get rid of the smell. it will go away by itself after using it a few times(10 times or so)
It is not unusual for a new brush to stink, but the advice about shampooing it was spot on, tha and regular use will make it go away. Hope you enjoy the brush. Welcome to The Shave Den 59caddy! my badger... I have only one brush an unbranded badger from royalshave. (their house brand) it smelled a little not over powering. I can definitely say it does not over power any of my shaving creams. maybe somewhere along the manufacturing process it was left in water for too long. and the hair rotted :sick007 . its not entirely impossible.
Thanx for the help, I'll try the soap, someone also told me to soak it in vinegar and warm water, will try both, thanx for the replies.
I had a similar thing happen with my banded boar brush. In my case, I figured it was just any excess coloring coming off of the bristles.I always assumed badger hair brushes were left their natural color, but perhaps that's not the case.
My Omega 49 took about a month of everyday use to get the stink out. Man, that first week was :sick007!! I have an Omega 10098 and a Semogue 2000 that only took about a week's worth of shaves to get the smell out. Of the three, I like the 49 the best. It has broken it to be a fantastic brush.
