The New Merkur

Anyone out there used the New Merkur, they call it the chunky, it comes in Red or Blue? Just curious to see what you thought?

 

It doesn't look right somehow. Just my $.02

It looks like a lava lamp with a razor head attached to it.

New Merkur razor

I think you should buy one for your girlfriend or wife. I don't think they are going to sell many and they will discontinue the line. In ten years or so they will become collector items that sell for huge prices.

A friend of mine once said to me, "I don't think anybody but a pimp would like something like that!" He was refering to my nickel plated Smith and Wesson, model 19 .357 magnum pistol. No offense meant, "There is no accounting for taste", when it come to human beings. I have developed a great sense of humor because of my personnel foibles. This could be one of the first dual purpose razors, shaving and something else that comes to mind.

On second thought, maybe if it was a nice German pewter, with a slightly different look, it might be kind of classic looking

The head looks like Merkur's other closed comb razors, so it probably shaves pretty much the same. I don't like the way the handle looks, but of course that's personal preference, and maybe it really does offer a better grip, I don't know.

 

I almost bought one when they first appeared. I like the idea of a thicker handle. I passed because they don't offer an open comb version.

 

That's a good point actually as it could be quite suitable for someone with arthritis or similar problems. I agree with the general opinion that it is not a looker.

Maybe so, but looks don't shave the face. Neither does the handle. Keep in mind what Slivovitz pointed out - it has a Merkur head. I have two 34Cs, an 11C and a Futur. They all shave very well. That said, I still think it's an ugly razor and wouldn't buy one.

 

I don't think it would be that bad if it came in silver.

I would be willing to bet that this thing will be the dogs danglies. The Merkur heads are superb anyway. Its the handle ergonomics & our German brothers do NOT just throw designs out there on a whim.

I might have to get me one.

 

Ended up getting one in the red, shaves great. Same quality Merkur head and it is heafty! Not pretty but handles great.
