So, in my quest for the perfect shave, I am hitting a snag. I am not sure of the perfect blade angle. I am getting some irritation on the skin that I would really like to cut down on, and I think my angle might be the cause. For info sake, I have an undated Gillette SS with a Dorco ST-300 blade. I want to get technique down before switching types of blade, so I continue to work with this type. I have about five shaves under my belt. How sharp should the angle be? I notice that I can cut the hair on a decent range of angles. Should I be bringing the blade closer to parallel with the surface of my skin. Thanks for the help.
My one concern would be that Dorco ST-300 blade is causing the irritation, they are pretty poor in comparision to most other readily available blades. Technique really develops with feel and a little experimentation. It will come with time... there is no one set angle as peoples faces vary but 30 degrees is an approximate estimate that is usually suggested. ________ volcano vaporizer
Hear me now.............. Blade angle is critical AND...............it varies with each razor. Experiment with your equipment and start on the conservative side. Less is MORE. Good luck :eatdrink047
I've been wet shaving for a long time and I had that Dorco blade and it simply did not cut it for me either. Try something else...anything else but not a Merkur blade. Now how's that for one man's opinion? Cyril
One thing you might try is laying the razor head flat on your face. Slowly rotate the handle until the head position changes so the blade just makes contact with your skin. Use that angle and see how it works for you.
But, but, but, but, but I paid a whole $1.05 for a pack of ten! :happy102 I'll ditch the 300 and try a blade out of my sampler pack. I love how cheap it is to get blades. I'll give this a try tomorrow. Query - through the lather, how can you tell when the blade is in contact without moving the razor?
While I agree the Dorco ST300 isn't a great blade (even though I don't find it as bad as most others), the ST301 is a different story. The ST301 is not my favorite blade, but still a very good one and MUCH better than any other Dorco blade. Just don't want you to dismiss all Dorco blades based on the ST300. To me that's the equivalent of judging boar brushes based on the VDH brush.
Couldn't agree more. The ST301 is the first blade I purchased in a bulk of 100. I wouldn't have done that without having tried it from a sample pack first. I do like it.
301s I recently put down my Iridums to try out some other blades, the dorko 301s seem ok. they are sharp enough and give me a good shave. if you are getting too much irritation switch blades your face will love you for it. the other one that seems ok are the sharks tried a few of those. it seems like the more experience you get. blades that you did not like before, seem fine now.
Thanks for the help! I've put in a Derby, and I'm going to shave soon this afternoon. I'll update with results!
The jury is still out. I may have dulled the blade by using it to shave my head first (a spectacular success!), but now my face and neck hurt. I think I need to give my face a couple days off before shaving again, and I am hereby declaring a moratorium on ATG shaving of Dave Makovec's face and neck for the foreseeable future. You are all on notice.
