So this is going to be my first kit. Best Badger Brush at Deluth trading co. made by Edwin Jagger ($39.50) Merkur 38C HD "Barberpole" ($42.00) Blade sampler from bullgoose.com- 14 different makers (80 blades $25.45) Ogallala Bay Rum, Limes & Peppercorns Shaving Soap. I already have some WH, and a shave balm. I am not totally sure about the razor I been thinking about the razor and should I get an adjustable instead of the Merkur 38c HD? Something like the Futur or the Progress. What's you thoughts ???? So you think I should start with and adjustable that can grow with me instead of just the fixed blade ones. Thanks Guys for the help.:thanks:happy096
That's a really nice combo to start with, Kevin :happy088 If you consider an adjustable, please don't rule out the old skool Gillette's They are really, really nice razors for a good price!!
Great sounding kit there Kevin, seems like you got the basics covered. As far as which of the 2 razors to get? I always recommend using a fixed head razor for those that are just starting out, just so that th urge to tinker with the adjustments is removed. After you get your technique down, then you could always pick up an adjustable, and sell off the HD. You really shouldn't have any trouble selling an HD, they always seem to go pretty quick in the BST forum. Like I said, that is my opinion, and I'm sure that others will tell you different.
Hi! Hey Kevin are you new to wet shaving or just new to the wonderful world of DE shaving? Im the proud owner of two old skool Gillettes! The first one is a 1960 Fatboy adjustable and a 1962 slim adjustable. My dad and I swapped his Merkur Progress for my Fatboy for a little bit so we could each shave with something different. It has been my experience the Progress seems to be a little less forgiving than the Fatboy. I will continue to collect and use all sorts of razors but for me My Fatboy is all Ill ever need! Using a Feather blade in it provides me with a BBS nearly everytime. So back to your question I think if your new to wet shaving a less aggressive razor is the safest bet. If your like me and have been a wet shaver all along an adjustable razor will work fine for you if your careful. Hope this helps! Jason
Welcome Kevin. Your starter setup looks fine to me. If you don't develop RAD, you may never need another razor. As a couple of others have said, I'd hold off on the adjustable for now. You may want one later, but it's an unnecessary extra complication when you're starting out. Enjoy TSD!
Well the wisdom has been written on the wall and I decided that I will start with the non-adjustable 38C....and pray to God to keep me from developing the dreaded RAD:shocked003....Thank you everyone for the wisdom and sound advice. :thanks happy093:happy093
The only way to make yourself feel better when the AD's strike, is to post pictures of the "offending" goodies in The Haul section when they arrive! (nudge nudge, wink wink)
Looks like a nice setup. I've been at this for just 8 weeks, you'll pick it up quick but you want to keep the variables the same for a bit. I am thinking about getting a Merkur Futur but suspect that even if I do I will want to keep my Edwin Jagger, if nothing else because I know that it will be a good yard stick to judge new blades by. FWIW I think I would have tinkered if I started with an adjustable.
I purchased the Merkur 15c open comb as my first DE after getting hooked. I enjoy it in the rotation regularly. The Barber Pole 38c looks cool and I am considering it. Let me know how you like it, is it aggressive or mild shaving.
Not sure what my advice is worth, being very new myself, but I'm pretty sweet on the Edwin Jagger DE89L I got after reading glowing reviews on another (cough) forum Not adjustable though...
