But if you don't try any other brands (sample pack), you'll never know if there is another brand that is comparable to the Feather. In my case, the Lord Platinum are its equal and at a much cheaper price. Can get 100 for $10.00 bucks at most online vendors. Of course, YMMV.
A fair point, I actually have some Lord Platinum, Wilkinson Sword, Sharks and Crystals to try so it will be interesting to compare to the Feather which is the current high water mark. From a price perspective, $10 for 100 blades is certainly a good price and would probably last me a full year. Given all of the other investments I've made in shaving in the old cartridge style shavers I don't mind spending a little more to get a large stash of better DS blades like the Feathers IF there is a discernible improvement in performance, even a minor one.
I've used the Feather and it is a great blade. But I am trying the 7 o'clock permasharp now and I'm not sure there's any difference. Must do more testing - too bad I can't shave twice a day.
I've been following this thread from the start, reluctant to say anything. But I finally have to chime in with my two cents... If settling for less (from the OP) means it's not a Feather, but the results are a more comfortable shave that is close enough for my satisfaction (and is cheaper, to boot), then, yeah, I guess I will settle for less. Threads that claim, "THIS is THE one, THE only, THE best xxx there is. There is NO other" really bother me. Can you tell? To each his own. It's your shave, enjoy it how you want.
Just put Feather in my backup Weishi Gunmetal. Hm... not bad. I even got BBS on my chin But slightly more irritation comparing them in Merkur HD.
+1 Feathers are *the* sharpest blades, but they sacrifice smoothness and longevity for it. For whatever reason they seem smoother in a slant ( Which is as close to a fact as you'll find in wet shaving, as most fans of feathers and slants agree that they work well together), and I really liek them in it. I think that longevity+cost is a lot of why many feather fans don't "swear by them. I like them, but cheap blades is what appealed to me initially in DE shaving. Being able to not care Feathers are $0.35 a piece or even higher from most suppliers and last half as many shaves as blades which are nearly as sharp, such as yellow Gilettes and Astras. I get great shaves with a feather in my slant, but they last a whopping two shaves for me, three if I cheat and do my first 2 passes with an Astra, IP red, or yellow Gilette. needless to say, I usually just use an Astra or feather.
I think it has to do with the slicing motion of the slant being easier on the relatively "flimsy" edge of the feather. The "flimsiness" is probably due to the sharpness and materials used to achieve that sharpness. Don't quote me on this though.
I wonder if any of you have tried the 7 O'Clock Super Platinum Black. Its made by gillette India. It is my fav blade over a feather as I not only find it sharp and way smooth, but also lasts longer for me than a feather which just tapers to dullness around 3 shaves. The black lasts me at least 6 shaves !
I really like the Feather, gives me a great shave in a Jagger 89; I've just bought Futur to try a more aggressive razor with the Feather. I have no trouble with cuts or nicks, but then again I've been shaving for about 50 years, so I think I have the technique down....
I've tried them many times over the last few years. For whatever reason I just can't get the hang of them. Don't know if it's my skin, my technique (most likely) or what.
Wellll... I did tried them 20 minutes ago.. And IT IS A FANTASTIC BLADE! I shaved with the Feather in the R89! Lathered with some speick soap. What a shave! Super smoooth! Unbelievable. I did the right thing and let the Feathers to try last. By now I think my technique is good. And it paid off! What a shave! Smooth, smooth, smooth! Pardon me, I sound like a kid in Christmas eve :ashamed001. This is the sharpest smoothest blade I have ever tried. Cheers friends! :happy108
I bought a blade sampler pack (New to DE Shaving), and I'm definitely saving the Feathers for last. I'm secretly hoping that I don't really like them though, due to the price.
Leave them for last. Get your technique right. And only then try the Feather on. I've resisted the temptation for 4 months now.. :happy102. But it paid of! Spot on, perfect shave. About the price, I think it's worth it. Cheaper than the cheapest disposable, or cartridge razor. So why not enjoy shaving? If Feathers are your blade, go for it. No regrets
Feathers rock Heard all the hype about the ninja sharpness of Feathers. I used Derby's (terrible for me), Bluebirds (Derby's basically), Merkur's (ugh), Super Iridium's (Good), Gilette Yellow's (Good) and Red Personna's and Crystals' (both my fav's), and finally tried the Feathers in my Futur set on 1.5. BBS oh yea, nothing to fear, they gave a great shave. Will be using them again.:happy093
How many shaves are you guys giving each blade as you try them out? I've only tried the Merkur Platinum so far... think I'll move on to something else tonight.
Still moving slowly but surely through my sampler pack, and couldn't wait any longer for the Feather. I got 2 great shaves from it, then the third was horrible. I will try them again, but so far, the Super Iridium gave a better shave, and I was able to get 7 shaves out of the blade with no problem.
How many shaves are you guys giving each blade as you try them out? I use a blade for a max of seven days or when the shave starts to get bad @ 20 to 50 cents a blade why settle for anything less than a DFS. I usually get 6 or seven shaves per blade but on some blades three or four. I have tried eight different brands of blades so far. I have six different razors so the ones I get 3 or 4 shaves still need to be tried on the other razors. Lots of fun testing and experimenting with the different blades and razors.
