Definitely check out some of the other recent threads in the straight razor forum. A lot of folks taking it up right now. There are a lot of good reasons, such as not using up disposable blades and all the resources involved, a closer shave once you've mastered the basics, and probably most of all, a sense of accomplishment. I mean, any fool can grab a multi-bladed modern razor with all the plastic and guards and do a reasonable job of not cutting themselves. But the shave is pretty bad. A straight must be respected, and must be learned. And it's cool to mess with. A real piece of steel, made by hand in many cases, and not modern mass-production. Convinced yet? :D

I've been shaving with a straight for approx a month, picked up a full set of hone stones and a strop, it's such a rewarding experience learning all the tricks, and theres books and books worth of them! The shave is amazing and it's quite enjoyable!

Plus there awsome to collect! I can't stop haha

There were several reasons for me: To master the "art" of shaving with these things, my hatred of everything designed to be "disposable", to learn how my grandfathers (and their fathers) shaved - and, simply, because it's cool :D

+1 on the cool factor. I just like slowing down and doing something the right rather then the fast new way. We've lost much in the modern world and some things are worth a little extra time.

Much the same as other Guys and gals, I don't like the throw away society we live in now. I like fountain pens, My old paraffin pressure lamps instead of a torch, I like old cars, not the jelly molds we get now. Of course I like to be different as well. The real kicker was when I saw an advert for a Fusion on telly, Some dude with a diamond in his ear! When I was young if I wore a stud I would of got the crap kicked out of me. Mens products are looking more like womens products everyday. There is a concerted effort to feminize men in England. I won't have it! :angry037

Regretably, the Colonials are already there my English brother. Our women have made women out of many of us then they watch Lifetime Network and complain that there's no real men left  But I'll not go quietly into that good night (Dylan Thomas reference alert), although a noob to straights, I'm rockin it, baby! Unfortunately my boy stiill thinks electrics and the Schick Quattro are the cutting edge of shaving technology. Oh well it took me a while to come around, I suspect he'll do the same.

Do you mean "men" like when a woman says "hmmph men!" or men as in hairy chested, scars on the face types?

(Note that I'm still on a DE, but I'm hoping to work my way there one day)

so this has majorly turned away from what the point of this thread was. to just share some stores about why some of you have chosen straight. to be freindly and fun. not a politcal kerfuffle. please stick to the point of haveing fun and enjoying each others reasons for haveing chosen straight razor, and stop attacking others, as light as it may be. it is still a blatent attack.

Did Mynorx touch a soft spot? How low do your pants hang?

I like what the straight razors do for my skin. I have rough, yet sensitive skin and the straights keep my complexion clear and actually helped to alleviate the bumpiness.

    1) it's cool
    2) it's dangerous (well, more dangerous than a Mach III)
    3) yet another affirmation to my sons that I'm nuts
    4) I wear my scars as a badge of honor, like the Heidelberg fencing team
    5) My favorite uncles did it
    6) something most folks wouldn't consider
    7) the razors are very cool
    8) my sister thinks it's cool (she likes knives, etc)

Can't think of anything else right now.

I like straights because they require a break from the norm. That is, in today's give it to me now, give it to me faster society, the straight razor shave is an aberration. It requires time, technique and focus. It is not something that one will master in a day. The fact that it takes time and effort to master, makes me proud that I can do it. It is also a great way to make yourself slow down at the start of the day. It helps me get focused and after that, the rest of the day just seems to be a little easier to handle.

Oh, and the razors are way cool!!:happy023

Straight Razors Will Save The World for 12.99

By reducing the amount of plastic in the landfill, they just might. Not only that but they are finally getting affordable!!!!! I just saw a U.S. seller in Florida selling Gold Dollars on the bay (which hone up good) for 12.99 shipped. When I first got started a new Dovo at 100.00 or more was the only option. Glad its getting more affordable and popular. Maybe retirees, college kids and just plain old poor folk like me will have a chance :)
