I really wonder if shaving with canned goo is cost effective versus say a Tub of Taylors Avocado or Rose which I believe most people would say is not only a good cream, but rides the line of luxury as well.

I imagine a can of goo is 3-5 dollar where this stuff is 14. I remember having to use a ton of it as well and a can only lasted around 1-2 months. I think of tub of Taylor could last close to 6 or more. I have no idea as I will probably never get even halfway done with any of my products

Currently Using "Goo" in a can.

I have used Williams and VDH shaving soap. I need to try other kinds to effect a more informed opinion. I have never tried any creams in a tube, but would like to. Soaps so far have left my face too dry ad tight; and right now I have 6 cans of foam and I just can't justify throwing them away. If you simply put it on your face it is very dry and just awful. But I find that you can greatly enhance your experience with it if you do some extra things with it: first, after taking a hot shower, put a hot wash cloth on your face, then take a liberal amount of foam and rub it in your face until it disappears. Do this about 2-3 times, it is time consuming I will admit. Then dip your brush in a sink of hot water and put a glop of goo on your brush and lather on your face, repeating the process as many times as you see fit. The hydrated foam works much better this way as opposed to just smattering it on your face w/o any water. Yes the foam will dry in a bit, that's when you take your razor and dip it in your water, tap the razor on your face above the dried area of foam and water will trickle down the area moisturizing your foam again. When you are finished with how many passes you make, rinse off with a wet washcloth or whatever you use. Finish with whatever aftershave balm or liquid you use. I personally use drugstore witch hazel and it works great for me. I usually always get beween a DFS and BBS everytime if I take the time to do it properly, and my face does not feel tight and dry. I'm very much a budget/frugal individual so I try to make the most of what I have. In the future I would like to try the creams, or even soaps that contain glycerin, but I need to use up the cans I currently have; just can't bring myself to throw them away although I have been known to give them away to buddies who use them. Hope this helps someone here who is like minded or budget conscious or lives in an area where creams and soaps are not immediately available. No disrespect/offense intended to the purists out there, just a little frugal advice.

I currently use the canned goo stuff but that's just so I don't throw it away. I bought a few soaps and only used my c&e sienna so far but I love it. Right now I'm using nivea canned goo and the aveno stuff too. Both I think are really great products. Since I'm new to shaving with soaps I'm using them as my standard for how my foam should look with the soaps.

Hi newbie here and do you smear the creams on and then brush to lather? I just bought some cream samples along with soaps from TSD. Best regards:confused:

You can face-lather, you can make lather in a bowl, you can even generate it on your palm. Do whatever works best for you :) I'd suggest to start with the bowl so you could easily observe how the lather's being generated and what causes it to be that way :)

in terms of initial outlay, yes the canned is less expensive.

However, with so many creams and soaps lasting much longer, they do end up being cheap once amortized over the life of the product.

    YMMV

I apply the canned foam on the brush after letting the brush soak in water from 5-10 seconds. Brush is VDH Boar White Handle.

Usually cream but if I have to use canned foam then I use Proraso. It's the best canned foam I've used.

  18. While I was waiting for some shipments of better creams to get here, and before I found out that my local Indian grocer carries Nivea and Old Spice. I used Barbasol canned foam, and was quite pleased. As a frugal college kid looking to save where I could. Targets two cans for a 1.99 was hard to beat among the cans.
I suppose everybody else in the thread does have a point though that a high quality product will last a good little bit longer, and smell prettier.

  19. of the two choices...cream wins.

+1 Again...sorry I keep "coppin' your licks"..:)) But you said it...The foam's just not happening...When I was first coming back to DE shaving I tried to justify the Gel by using a brush with it, because I believed in its lubricational qualities.. but I was just a victim of very professional advertising...The Arko Stick, Arko Creme, too many soaps and creams and sticks to mention that are just Better...Watch Mantics "How to Build and Apply Traditional Shave Lather" video in the Shave-School on this site, it's really fun to watch, plus it's very informative and may help you in making your own lather, then make the comparison yourself, then let us know what you think...
