Picked up some old razors

Anybody run across a Barbasol razor in their time? I went antique shopping with the wife and picked one up for $5. I grabbed since it reminded me of the merkur I use. It has weight, nice gnarly handle. It comes apart just like my other. I am going to try shaving with it tonight after a thorough cleaning.

I picked up some others and need advice on cleaning and polishing them up. The rest were Gillettes and as soon as I figure the picture thing out I will post them up. What do y'all do to clean and polish or is there already a thread for it?

All in all, I got 7 razors for $20. One of them a neat little gold travel case with a nice short Gillette inside.

    Great snag!

Barbasol razors come up on fleabay from time to time and go for more than you would expect.

lots of theories on cleaning and polish - but before you get too carried away, some of the older Gillettes have a silver finish - don't remove that. Also gold finishes have a thin lacquer protecting them.

I use toothpaste, and old tooth brush and scrubbing bubbles. When it is clean, I barbicide or alcohol soak the razor. I buff with a soft cloth.

Everything Justin said and if you don't have any scrubbing bubbles, I use vinegar with a few drops of dish soap and it takes care of most of the crud. Then just rinse with cold water and buff with a towel.

think the barabrsol was a score , I've tried to buy one on eBay a few times to inspect how it was made and always got outbid.

I just looked some pictures of them on B&B. Beautiful razors. Anyone know when they were made?

Fantastic price on the Barbasol razor!

Just an FYI, they are very aggressive razors.

I usually put a Derby or IP in mine to tone it down a bit. Nice heavy razor. Enjoy

  8. Yep, nice pickup on the Barbasol. I've been looking for one for a while (just to try it out), so if it doesn't work out for you, please contact me.

    ;)

Thats a good haul. That Barbasol razor is nice. Only problem is you deflate my ebay experience. For what you paid for the lot , thats not even half of what I paid for one of your razors. I am not hating you, I just have to get to a antique store or two.:)

Very nice snag on the lot. The barbasol is one of my favorite DE shavers.

    Kind regards,

That's a great haul! I've gotten some great deals at antique shops lately and this is about as good as it gets. Congrats!

By the way, I used the Barbasol this morning and it made the merkur blade feel better than in a merkur razor. Can't wait to try out a feather blade in it(which is what I normaly use).
