SOTD Thursday April 8, 2010 Old Timer's Shave Day today! Razor: GEM 1912 Blade: GEM Personna SS Soap: Williams Shaving Soap Mug: Vintage Old Spice (Circa 1961) Brush: Col Conk Barbershop Badger ASB: Dickinson's Witch Hazel Aftershave: Old Spice Cologne After this mornings BBS shave with this old timers kit, I am impressed with the quality of this vintage shave gear. The GEM 1912 SE razor is one of the best shaving razor's ever produced! I used the Williams shaving soap and got TONS of Creamy lather that stayed moist all during the 3 pass shave. The Dickinson's was refreshing and toned my face and the Old Spice is a memory of my Dad from the past that I very much enjoyed. I guess as they say, "Old Guys Rock!"
Thursday, April 8, 2010 Razor: Merkur 34C Blade: Super Iridium Brush: Vie-Long 16510 White Badger Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime Soap: Irisch Moos Shave Stick A/S: Mr. Taylor I am surrounded by too much temptation and finally gave in to the urge to adopt a Vie-Long Brush. All in the name of research I say! I have heard from several sources that they use the same hair as Plisson in their White Badger brushes and I have no reason to doubt that claim. Pure luxury! The hair is extremely soft and my initial impression is that it would make an excellent cream brush. I used it with a shave stick and got a lot of lather but I prefer a scrubbier brush for face lathering. I will try it with a cream and bowl lather next time I use it.

Wednesday Night Shave Razor - '67 Slim Blade - Rapira (4) Pre - Bigelow PS oil Soap - Erasmic shavestick Brush - Trumper Pure Badger Splash - Swiss Pitralon Balm - Nivea Replenishing shave rating - 2.5 out of 5 I'm realizing i don't know how to tell when to change my blade, haha. I think in general i'm gonna make it 3 shaves after last night. My last shave with the Rapira was fantastic, this one i wound up with razor burn after the first pass. Also curious if perhaps the Erasmic shavestick is the new formulation that everyone hates. I was able to get lather, but it was nothing stellar. This would have gotten a flat 2 out of five, but the fact that i wasn't bleeding afterward has to count for something i suppose.

Thursday's Shave-(Couldn't post until Friday morn.) Cup Turkish coffee- Mehmet Effendi Hot water (at sink) splashed on face for about 2 Mins Arko Shave Stick Gillette '65 Slim Perma-Sharp Supers (Day 4) Cold water rinse Arko NEM-Soft Losyon Today was not the norm, for me... Very little time, wife and I had to make early morning business meeting... No Shower--Hate that one...Also I usually change blade after 3 shaves, because of lack of time, thought maybe I'll just try and see how it goes..... From face prep, through 1st WTG pass, nothing out of the ordinary... As I'm rinsing my face to relather for 2nd pass, Wife says, "Driver's here early, got to leave NOW!!!" (what a DRAG). Rinse face...squirt a couple drops of Arko-Nem, Soft Losyon (sic), in hand and rub onto face as I run down the hall to throw on my suit...In less than 2 mins, I'm dressed and on elevator... During ride, I rub my face, and am Shocked...could it be ???...rub face again...YESS !!! DFS in capital letters, in one pass, on older blade. The Shaving Muse was with me on that shave...All day long I kept rubbing my face in disbelief; and non-stop smiling; damn near a perfect BBS in one pass... Sometimes in the face of adversity, coolness is achieved ) ____________

The only way to learn when your blade has expired is to keep everything else - your prep, the razor, brush, soap or cream and your post shave routine - the same. Constantly changing things up will only add to the confusion of knowing if it was the blade tugging or just a soap that doesn't give enough cushion or slickness, for example. Another thing is to keep the brand of blade constant until you figure that out. Many folks find some brands only good for 2 to 3 shaves, while other brands hold out for a couple of more shaves. Isn't all this trial and error fun? You bet it is! :chores016
