can an employer legally require login information from an employee for facebook? i know they started to look at facebook and myspace etc home pages...but login information? iv searched all over the web and cant find anything saying they can or cannot....i live in california as im sure you would need to know that. but is it legal? thanx
Not just "no", but "h311 no"...legal by law or not, no. no one will get my passwords for anything besides the ones used by me in my place of employment, and that if I leave and they need to access the things I've put in place. Besides, I'm pretty sure that's a big legal "no" as well EDIT: I remember reading something recently about a city that was asking for such info from their employees, can't remember where, but I seem to recall that being a major ordeal, and that the employees did not have to comply.
Without knowing a thing, I'm going to say no. Next they'll ask for your debit card PIN. If the FB page is business related, maybe. Not a personal FB page, though.
i found that too. it was for Montana i think. http://scitech.blogs.cnn.com/2009/06/19/want-a-job-hand-over-your-facebook-password/
yeah...the only problem is that it doesnt say if it became law or not and if it was just for Montana.
Didn't sound like there was anything "law or not" about that. It's not illegal, but you don't have to comply. I don't even understand why we're having this conversation. The answer is, "No!". Legal or not.
I would have a serious problem with that if it ever became legal (who knows, it's probably on page 7,463 of the Obamacare plan...). No personal things should be accessible by employee. I've nothing to hide, and they'd be bored to death reading my stuff, but that doesn't matter. Like JoAnna said, what's next? PIN numbers? Combination to your home safe? DNA sequence? nope, that's overreaching the boundary, to which I'd personally tell them they can reach over and kiss it..... but, that's just me. why they'd even need login info when they could potentially read all you postings/etc. They'd have an easier time asking for and requiring screen names, but that's still over reaching in my book
well im applying for the sheriff dep. and they asked me for that info. and they basically said if i dont give it to them now (at the time of the meeting) then i should just walk out and go home. that was not the words used but that was the end meaning
My Mom was told by her employer to change some content on her FB page. They weren't so brash as to ask her for her log-in info though. I'd abandon my FB if they even asked, then I'd change my log-in ifo to some really disrespectful stuff and hand it in to them. Make it like: username:my_employer password:luvs_ _with_elephants* "Sure thing boss, here ya go!" *Warning: If you highlight the blank space after the password you will see the smart aleck password but it is R rated. Do so at your own risk/moral corruption! EDIT: Never mind about the warning, I forgot different folks may use different background colors.
Did you give it to them? You see here's a little scenario; Your boss/supervisor/employer has your log-in info Decides one day they don't like you for whatever reason They can simply log in to FB and make some very bad post as YOU Thus possibly causing you to lose your job Jim is spot on as far as I'm concerned. They aren't just asking for a list of sites you frequent and your usernames. They're asking for LOG-IN info.
ok found my answer....actaully a nother friend found it. http://www.careerbuilder.com/Articl...mployer_ask_f&ArticleID=1363&cbRecursionCnt=2 its at the bottom of the article. the short version is yes...
yeah....well i had to give it to them right then and there or they would have said "alright then have a nice life". and i couldnt really say "is that legal?"
okay, so it's legal to ASK you for it.... it's legal for me to ASK someone for a million dollars, too....don't mean I'm gonna get it
Sorry, I'm gonna nitpick here. The article says it is legal to ASK. You're asking if it's legal for them to REQUIRE.
