Hi to everyone, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm in my first week of "real" shaving. I picked up a 1960 Gilette Super Speed on ebay for $8.99, including shipping. I bought a VDH mug, brush and soap set at Wal-Mart for $4, along with blades for 1.67, AV for 4.99 and some witch hazel for $3. A trip to Bath & Bodyworks got me a tube of OC Bigelow SC for $5. Passable results so far. For years I have shaved with Gilette multi-bladed razors. I've always had a problem shaving under the neck, either leaving too much hair or getting redness, skin irritation and bumps (and still leaving too much hair). I started shaving in the shower and experiemnted with different SC's, finally landing on Nivea Sensitive SC in the white can. I came across a post on "The Art of Manliness" website about shaving like your grandfather and I was hooked! I began reading and found this and the other place. Since my intial purchases, I 've ordered a small blade sampler pack from WCS, looking forward to trying those soon. So far, I have found it a lot of fun to make the lather and I love the smell of the OC Bigelow SC, which I understand is the same as Proraso.
Welcome to the Den! Proraso and an SS were where I started this ride, too. Enjoy! PS: Making lather is always fun!
The Bigelow is a good intro. If you can you should order some samples from here of other creams just to give you some things to compare with. Welcome to TSD.
Good idea, I'm going to try the VDH soap next, but I already have my eye on Taylor's SC, read some good reviews, perhaps a few others.
Welcome to TSD! Sounds like a great start. I still love my SS. The VDH brushes aren't the best, but they work. Seems some only last about 6 months and other 5 years or more. But, the soap is a different story. VDH Deluxe is a very good soap and a great bargain for the price IMHO. It's a good intro to cold pour type shave soaps and I expect you'll really enjoy it.
This morning was my 5th shave, and it came out really smooth, for sure the best yet! I made sure I got up a little earlier and took my time, Went WTG and ATG and did not even scream when I put my Aqua Velva on! :shocked003
That's great! You're a fast learner! I've got to tell you - my old man was a big fan of Dragnet. We watched every episode when they were new, then again in syndication several times over. He used to call it "Badge 714". I still enjoy watching...
From one noob to another...hello and welcome. I went to wally world when I first got started and found absolutely ZERO soap, mugs, or brushes...either single or sold as a kit. I mean there was not even a place on the shelf for the product! I has to piece together a brush from Walgreens and soap from CVS! I am soooo glad I did though! I have seriously gotten the RAD. I just bought another razor today from TSD member Will aka jimmyfingers. So I guess I better go update my tag lines. Welcome again and enjoy those shaves!
I grew up in the 1960's, I think the show reflected the average person's values and outlook at the time. The action was very slow compared with today's shows. Joe always had a nice shave--LOL:happy102
Thanks, I seem to remember a few years ago that mugs, brushes and soaps were much more common at stores--before I was into it of course!! At least with the internet and communities like TSD, we have a much more awesome selection to choose from.
Yeah, I haven't seen an real wet-shaving supplies in stores... but maybe I'm going to the wrong stores. The Internet is amazing for hobbies. You can find thousands of people interested in sharing knowledge on just about any subject.
