My favorite beer ever was Tolly Cobbold Bitter served on tap in an English pub named The Fox where I ate lunch nearly every day when I lived in the UK. To my dismay, I recently learned that Tolly was bought out and no longer exists.

Fortunately, I have found another great beer. It is called 1554 Enlightened Black Ale from the New Belgium Brewery. Amazing stuff. It goes down so easy it's scary.

Another very good beer is Samuel Adams Black Lager which is just as good as the 1554.

Anyone have recommendations for other dark beers or bitters? I know about Boulevard Porter and intend to try it. Obviously, I also am aware of Guinness. Never really been a fan but I may give it another try.

I like the Dogfish Head world wide stout its not cheap and very strong. Another of my favorites is the 120 minute IPA made by the same company. I keep a case of each for special occasions.

    Dark Beers

I don't drink nearly as much as I used to, hardly ever actually now. When I did, dark beers that I liked:

    1. Harp, made by Guiness.

    2. McEwan's Scotch Ale.

    3. Guiness Extra Stout.

    4. Michelob Dark.

    Thanks for the recommendations.

I tried a few of these I was able to find locally and to be honest 1554 comes out on top as my favorite beer.

Smithwick's was good but not worth the premium they're asking around here.

Sierra Nevada Porter was available but I bought the stout as I wanted a variety. Bad choice. I found it had a bitter taste that lingered... I didn't really like it at all. Bitter aftertaste killed it for me.

Anchor Porter was good and had a nice balance. Boulevard "Bully" Porter was very similar and a cheaper local beer so "Bully" gets the nod. Of course if Anchor is on sale... ;)

Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager was available but my plate was full. I will try that one soon.

Boddington's is the one in the yellow pint can that I couldn't remember for my earlier post. But...it may be a premium like Smithwick's.

    Glad your sampling went well.

Here's to dark beer by the pint :eatdrink004

Yes Boddington's Pub Ale-it's the closest thing to actual Bitter Beer from England. I love that stuff. There's a English Pub near my house that has it on tap. I wish I could find actual bitter beer on tap-never seen in this side of the pond.

Ahh boddington's in the yellow can by the four pack complete with the widget in the can. Good stuff a similar one is in the blue can Tetely's if I remember right. The dogfish I mentioned earlier is very good 20% abv though and 140$ per case.

    I love Dark Beer.

    Some of my favorites are:

Guinness Draught - could drink these all day. So smooth.
    Guinness 250
    Obsidian Stout
Most Stout beers that I've tried
A couple local breweries(Glacier Brewhouse & Midnight Sun Brewery) make some great stouts and porters

Ditto that on not drinking like I used to. My first was always Guinness. I liked pub poured half N half (Guinness and Tetley), and found a US micro brew by Erie Brewing called Railbender (Scottish Ale style) to be very tasty.

Sure it rocks! I personally a dark beer guy. Guinness rocks! Leffe Blonde/Brune rocks! And there is another one in Latvia that rocks even more... oh, god, this is heaven.

Amberbock, Yuengling Black and Tan and Modelo Negro are all favorites. When I'm not swilling a more pedestrian beer (i.e. PBR, Natural Light, etc.) More years ago than a care to admit, Lowebrau Dark was the beer of Kings but is very hard to find these days so I guess it couldn't have been all that good.

Even though IPA is my favorite style of beer, stouts are a close second.

    Victory Storm King Imperial Stout
    Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout
    Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
    Rogue's Shakespear Oatmeal Stout

These are 4 that never fail to satisfy.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Yuengling Black and Tan. Its good and not quite as expensive as a Guiness. Also like Modelo, but only at the Mexican restaurant.

I wish I could find some of these others listed above locally cause they sound good.
