Well how about this for some scary stuff looks like something you would cut yourself to ribbons with:happy102 And as for the blades I have used the same thing for getting paint off the window, If you know anything about these let me know.I am sure that this will never go near my face but I have a test dummy (sorry Huxley) who is willing to give it shot
And no I am not a collector (I'm sure I'm not ) it was a gift that I may have to regift

    Re-gift why?

That's a Gem Featherweight, I have one myself, and they give great shaves! Many members here use S/E razors with great success, with a Gem 1912 model being the most popular.

Just be sure to use blades made for shaving, since the blades from the hardware store aren't made for shaving.

Its has 4 blades and each one is embossed with GEM but I'm telling you there is no way that is going anywhere near my face :shocked003

You really won't know what a great shave you're missing then. While some can be agressive (like the Micromatic), most SE razors are wonderful, mild shavers.

    Tom is giving great advice.

Some gents use nothing but S/E razors, some well over 100 years old..

    That's fine. :)

Don't think we were trying to force you to use it, you asked for info, and we offered up what we know.

What have you got to lose? You can always graft on a new nose! Silly!

Thanks for all the advice but I might just offer it out at later date for people to give it a test drive as I love all that I have but at this stage this does not have a place, because my Futur, SS, Fatboy and 2 straights have a warm spot in my heart. But it does always make me wonder who owned it before my and what they where like.

:confused: hmmmm... you're willing to use a str8, but not an SE?

As has been said, you don't know what you're missing. They give fantastic shaves.

I know where I am with a str8 and also my DE's I am sure it does the job well its just not for me however it look well made and all that, And I'm sure people get on with these really well but I'll stick with what I know and will try at a later date to trade this for something, But for now its in the bathroom cabinet and it looks happy being left alone:D
By the way did anyone what date its around when they where produced?

I believe these Featherweights are from the 1950s. If you mean Gems designed primarily for modern SE blades, I have one with the 1900/1901 patent.:D I believe some of the earlier models (earlier than mine) will take both modern blades and old wedge blades.

Actually, the Featherweight in your picture is not one of my favorite SE razors, but some people like them. I prefer the 1912 style and the 1900/1901 model alluded to above, which take the same blades. Shave grade blades, though, not paint scraper grade. ;)

Whatever you like, of course, and if you have even one razor that you like, then trying anything else is for your own enjoyment. I think the only thing that's really dangerous about SE razors is that if you've learned on a DE, you may get the angle seriously wrong. If you use them properly, no problem.

I used to use a Featherweight and can say from experience that they're good SE razors.

You can't really mess yourself up with a Featherweight, beyond the usual nicks and razor-burns. So if you want to try out SE shaving the Featherweight is a good choice.

not to add to the peer pressure but YES YES YES YES YES YES, you gotta try it.

Seriously that's the gentlist of the SE razors, hold it flat on your face and slowly raise the handle until it shaves-see, it's EZ.

Like I said thanks all for the great advice but I'll leave this one well alone, And when I'm allowed to trade there will be a little Gem and 4 gem blades:D so you'll have to wait your turn

Seems a bit mercenary to sell a gift. Gift it if you don't want it.

but if I trade it for something I'll use then at least its not wasted, As I'll have something I can use and someone will get a razor they will use instead of it sitting in a draw gathering dust

I agree with you completely...they are vicious, bloodthirsty little monsters!

I am currently being held hostage by these three ruffians. They are demanding that I get another SE to keep them company.

One is even threatening me with a wicked looking blade!

Thank goodness I saw this thread and you don't want the SE.

Please...do the right thing...send me the Featherweight and save me!

I passed on a couple Gems last weekend, at the same store where I scored the Gillettes I posted in "The Haul: June 7-13" (dooh!):( Now, with all this discussion, I'm going to have to go back and see if they are still there:confused:
