Wow....I was sifting through the buy-it-now auctions on that famous auction site, and found a Gillette adjustable for the buy-it-now price of $250 plus the $20 shipping from South America. Not even a mention in the listing of whether the item was new or used. Being a relative newbie to this, I'm wondering if this is some kind of special Gillette adjustable or perhaps a typo? It is listed as antique GILLETTE "ADJUSTABLE" bill
Did it look like either of these? The one on the left is the "195" and the one on the right is the "Toggle." Both of these razors are highly sought after and regularly sell in the $200.00 range.
old de razors cost only 1 dollar or less back in the day. todays inflation is due to nostalgia. just because something is being sold for hundreds of dollars doesn't make it any good. if you are new just get a merkur progress for 50 bucks.
None of the above. Here's the picture from the listing: I've actually got my eye on a Merkur Futura some time in my futura.
That looks like an Adjustable Slim to me. I suppose a collector looking for a museum piece might pay that price, but a shave grade Slim can be had for $20.00 or less if you look around.
I've got one that looks as good as if not better than that minus the box. I'll knock 50.00 off for the missing box, you'll be the envy of all your friends. Do we have a deal?
Even as a 'newbie' returning to DE wet shaving after 35 years, I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. I'd been scanning that ol' auction website as well as hitting the antique stores in the area looking for bargains. Despite my initial post, I recognized right away this auction was a bit 'unrealistic'. Rest assured, I won't be purchasing that razor and until P.T.Barnum's Sucker Born every Minute comes along, the person selling that razor may not see much activity. I still like the Merkur Chrome finished Futura. My birthday is in about 3 weeks and I'm leaning toward treating myself. bill
Do not pay more than $20 for this razor. The only exception would be if it comes with the certified letter of authenticity..... like mine, which was once owned and used by Clint Eastwood. Just saying'.
Wow, this is even more than the price I wanted for my NOS FatBoy signed by Gillette president :happy102
I wrote to the 'gentleman' on that auction site and asked, since the razor had not been listed as either new or used, which was it? A bit tongue in cheek I also asked if it was solid gold. Here's the text, kind of a snide reply of a single X whatever that might mean. I pity whoever buys that believing they're getting a bargain. It's a slim in a fatboy case. No instructions or blade pack. It's next to worthless to a collector. A fatboy in the ORIGINAL BLISTER PACK (aka, never even opened) just went for 250 on the bay. Now that's collectable!
