Do you remember where you was 20 years ago today when you first heard that Little Stevie Ray Vaughan died? I do. I can only imagine how much better his already perfect style would be if he was still with us. I consider his death the greatest untimely death in the history of music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OBwIHIrJO8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GSpbuFSr2o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF1p8sawWJ0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S3lQHp3C2o
Yes, it was a sad day for sure! He is definitely a guitar God. Much like Jimi, way ahead of his time.
By the Gods! I remember when it happened! 20 years!? Sheesh! Make a guy feel old! I don't miss SRV.... I hear him playing on my system fairly regularly!
I carry a tiny bit of his spirit around with me always... Bill, here's one for you, my friend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAKOifRFwxw
That you do Tom, that you do, and thanks, you know how much I like that song. Funny thing, I do remember where I was and what I was doing, but at the time I wasn't a fan of Stevie's, that didn't happen till many years later. Stevie's death was tragic in many ways. Not only was he taken from us while too young and at a time when many felt he was on the verge of finally reaching the star status he deserved, but to have it happen so shortly after defeating the inner demons of drug and alcohol abuse that literally almost killed him four years earlier, just adds to the tragedy of his story. Stevie was one of those rare performers that sounded just as good or better live, as he did in the studio. When he hit that magic "zone" while he was playing, you can just watch the music come out without any thought about which note was next, it just happened. So to that end I'll post one of my favorite SRV videos, live of course, and it is just amazing the way he makes Charley moan in this song. This video is also a great example of his complete mastery of the guitar, while we all know how well he knew his way around the fretboard, watch his right hand during the solos, particularly between the 4 to 5 minute mark as he works the volume/tone knobs, and makes the five way switch dance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAv5ZuuSxSI Rest In Peace Stevie .
