My latest acquisition... New Improved "Pocket Traveler" serial numbered to 1926; solid sterling silver baring the hallmark of Wm B. Kerr & Co, Newark, NJ (Founded in the 1880s until 1927 when it merged into Gorham Manufacturing Company aka Gorham Silver); four-piece (including lid); open comb; double-edge; handle resembles a Zippo lighter; monogrammed FHE; near mint; accompanying blade date coded the 11th week of 1924; head cap pieces and blades store inside handle
"Nice" seems mild; I'll get out the thesaurus later. So this is something that Kerr/Gorham made by arrangement with Gillette? Is the entire razor sterling including the head? Congratulations on a great find.:signs021
Not really sure but I don't think the 2 head pieces are sterling. I think they are silver plated. I think Kerr bought the head pieces from Gillette as it doesn't seem likely Gillette bought the silver case/handle from Kerr but considering at one time Gillette contracted American Button Company to make razors for them, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that Kerr manufactured the head pieces too, to Gillette specs of course as did ABC. This razor is pictured in Krumholz as being in a celluloid or ivory Gillette case similar to the Tuckaways that came in an ivory case - back when ivory was legal of course. See the picture below: That's the fun part about collecting Gillettes.. they did so many weird things that's been confirmed, anything is possible with them. I've only seen 4 of these.. 1 on mr-razor.com, 1 in the Krumholz book, 1 sold on eBay 2 months ago, and this 1.
Wow, that thing is amazing,Where did you pick it up,Have you used it or do you intend to? Just wondering how it is shaving with it.
Thanks all. I purchased it on eBay. I haven't used it yet but certainly do intend to as I use at least once every razor I purchase for my collection unless it's sealed New Old Stock. This one definitely won't be an everyday user but I'll certainly give it a go once, soon.
