Hi all, I am looking for recommendations on a new 3 piece open comb. I am currently using a Gillette New from the 30's and would like a second razor as close as possible to it. I have seen the Merkurs, but there are some comments about their quality on the forums. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Chip
Is it me? or is every modern day manufacturer of razors getting a tag of, "beware, they have quality issues"? I see here in this thread about Merkur. I have four - not a single problem. I've seen it about Parker. I have one - not a single problem. So three people don't like the way the razor shaves and it's instantly a quality issue? Not that it could just be they have poor technique or the razor just doesn't work as they THINK it should. Or a couple of folks get the one lemon out of a lot of 10,000. Right away the company has quality issues. My point is that every single car manufacturer in the WORLD today has had a quality issue with a vehicle or two at one time or another. Yet people buy their cars everyday and are very satisfied with them. Buy the razor that catches your eye. If you don't like it, send it back. I don't recall any stories about problems with folks getting a replacement razor or a refund. This completes my little rant. To Chip, I truly hope you find a razor you'll be satisfied with for years to come!
Well, then - you haven't read my Ikon saga. He sent me a replacement head that was also faulty. He either doesn't know what he's doing or doesn't care. I don't want anyone else to have to repeat my experience. Like I said, read all the reviews, good & bad.
Now...when you say new, do you mean newly manufactured, or a new razor to you? How about both? If I was in the market for an OC, I would give that a shot me thinks...
I have the 11c and get great shaves from it. I also have a Gillette New and I usually find myself going for the 11c. Perhaps this is a matter of blade choice in the razor . I have been using feathers in the 11c and getting perfect shaves and yet when I aquired my Gillette New the feathers were a little too sharp for the razor. I had to reach for the Red Pack Personna blades to get a comfortable shave. I'm still getting use to shaving with the Gillette. Overall for what its worth I think the Merkur 11c is perhaps a slighly less aggressive razor than the Gillette New.
My recommendation would be a Gillette Old Type. Had a 1908 Single Ring that I gifted to my daughter. Not only is it open comb and 3 piece but it is hands down the most aggressive DE I have ever shaved with http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierertypen/Rasierertypen-03.jpg
I have an 11C and it is a good razor. However, the OP is looking for a 3-piece. The 11C is a 2-piece.
I have a Merkur 38c. While it's not an open comb, which the OP requests, l can comment on their quality. Mine is great and I haven't had any problems with it. I would suggest one to anyone and will probably buy another Merkur for myself in the future
Merkur 41 or Muhle R41. Both are great. Muhle has better finish and attractive carton display box if you need it It also has longer handle. It is not a agressive razor at all. But you can cut yourself even with a wooden stick, you know
