Hello, Just got a puck of Caswell and Massey Sandalwood as a gift. Is anybody else having trouble getting the lather to last and not disappear inside of 30 seconds? I like the soap otherwise and get a pretty good shave so far. I've only been shaving with a brush for about 2 months so any help is appreciated.
First, welcome to the Den. Caswell & Massey is one reason I keep a tube of unscented KMF cream in the medicine cabinet. I have their almond and I do like the scent, but I've found in order to get a decent lather I have to add two or three drops of KMF. Works fine after that, but I won't be buying more when this is gone.
I bought a puck of Caswell Massey and I've tried to make it work, but it's exactly like you said: smells great but the lather is like using a regular bar of bath soap, and disappears faster than a virgin on prom night. Mine's going into that special garbage can marked "lesson learned."
Caswell Massey is widely regarded as being one of the worst shaving soaps on the market today. It's not a matter of technique; nobody seems able to get this to lather properly.
I once got a puck of C-M soap to lather pretty good. However, it gave me a bad irritation all over my face and neck.
I received a message from Caswell & Massey stating simply the soap is not meant to give a lot of lather. I agree with you guys this one goes into the "Do not Use" list.
I must be the odd man out. I had a puck of their sandalwood that lathered up just fine. I didn't shave it much, but from what I did use it was an ok shave. Gifted it to my son so never really formed an in depth opinion. Smells real good. I've never bought another puck though so I'm pretty ambivalent about the brand.
Cream too Im glad I got a sample first. I couldnt get the cream to lather no matter how much I used. It made a very thin lather that gave mediocre shave.
I remember the Sandalwood cream smelled very nice, but the skincare was also no good. Not only that, the lather was almost non-existant.
I love their after shave milk. And their colognes are even better. But TSD milk is the best I've tried so far. C. S. Budzi
i think this is the only positive thing ive ever seen on CM. maybe it makes a better hand/body soap than a shave soap
Their new York "store" is also sad. I was there a couple of weeks ago based on a friend's recommendation. Apparently it's in the limelight district which is an old church turned notorious night club turned into this weird kiosk style mall thing. Caswell Massey is upstairs next to other "fragrances" and nobody was even watching the stuff. You have to go to the general cash register where the fragrances are purchased and buy your stuff there. Just in case you were wondering there is no New York store.
I washed my hands with my bar earlier just to see how it was. It left them kind of dry, and I didn't particularly like the scent (sandalwood) on my skin. So it's apparently completely useless. Going in the trash.
Can't comment on the shaving soap but I did come across several Sandalwood bath soap sets. 3 boxes with 5 large bars all for around ten bucks. Lather was great. Surprised to hear about the shaving soap. From my understanding they are supposed to be one of the oldest perfumers in the US.
Just switched to a Tweezerman's badger brush and that does seem to make a difference with this soap. Lather lasts a little longer and the lubrication is still very good.
