012111 - The one and only Old Gold Rolls Soap: Palmolive Stick in Gillette gold plated container Brush: Vintage Erskine Badger Razor: 1932 Gold Plated Series 1 Rolls (The "if you have to ask, you couldn't aford it" Rolls) AS: TOBS St James Wow, just Wow. I've been working on this razor for a couple of weeks now. It's ready and I've uesd it a few times. Fun facts for Rolls people: ceramic friction pad which is why I used a later version allignment sleeve. Can't replace it and haven't seen one like it. Silver stroping handle. Colasping razor handle. The blade had/has no discoloration after 79 years, unusually smooth shave and doesn't require much stroping. I've talked to a couple of old users of thes gold Rolls and was struck by their claim of only having to strop once a week or so. Didn't believe it but after trying it out skipping the strop, I think I do. I think they cherry picked like crazy when they put together a kit for gold plating but I'm not complaining.

Saturday: Omega Wooden Handle Super Speed/7 O'Clock day 2 Phyto Expert Regular SC :love008 :love008 :freezing :freezing Phyto Expert Sensitive AS Balsam :love008 :love008 :freezing :freezing Monsieur Givenchy EDT Somebody on another shaving forum says that the Phyto Expert has no cooling effect, but I disagree. It's VERY cooling, especially on the 2nd pass. The Phyto Expert Sensitive aftershave balsam has a lot of menthol in it, and it's very moisturizing and soothing, so today there was no need for my Lubriderm lotion, except on my body.
5/8 Union Cutlery Lion Brand Razor Arko Shave Stick Rudy Vey 22mm Finest Alum Clubman Bay Rum My second straight shave was far from perfect, but good enough to skip the Red Tip Touch up. Two WTG passes, 2 nicks, some minor irritation. Feeling good for day 2 with the straight.
Saturday, January 22, 2011 Pre-shave soap: Musgo Real Glyce Lime Razor: EJ Chatsworth Blade: Treet Dura Sharp Brush: Simpson Colonel X2L Soap: Proraso Classic A/S: Dickinson's Witch Hazel, Proraso Balm Although I am sorry that Iridiums are currently not available, the "Iridium panic" has motivated me to find some non-P&G blades that are very worthy stubble choppers. One of them is the Treet Dura Sharp, which gave me a great BBS shave this cold and snowy morning. The pre-shave soap really seems to help in getting a close shave, too. And the Proraso balm always provides a soothing, moisturizing finish.

Firday, January 21, 2011, about 9:00am Tolsom Facial Cleanser Hot Towel with Pantene Pro-V on Face Proraso Pre-Post Cream Vulfix 247 Pure Badger VDH Deluxe, face lathered, brush reloaded before each pass Merkur 11c Open Comb Vidyut SuperMax Stainless Blade (1st shave, corked and stropped on arm) Cold Water Rinse Thayers Unscented Witch Hazel Neutrogena Triple Protect Facial Lotion Remarks: My search for the right blade continues with SuperMax Stainless from India. After the usual prep routine, I lathered up and did the initial North-South pass. I noticed the exceptional performance of the blade, which was even better in the next pass, a South-North pass. I was convinced I would get the best shave ever at this point, but I started getting irritation at the third pass, which is ATG. I'm starting to think I am one of those people who can't go ATG no matter what. After this ATG pass and the touch ups, the result is not much better than from what I had with previous blades. It also occurred to me that I might be taking the improvement in my technique for the quality of the blade. I decided to put the blade trial away for a while and shave with one of my Wilkinson Swords just to see how much I have improved. That will also give me a chance to try my new Arko SS. I might do that next time or maybe I will wait till this blade is worn out. Uploaded with ImageShack.us
