i have a few major problems with my beard (which have caused me to avoid shaving because of all the ingrown hairs and nicks/cuts): 1) my beard is curly! not super curly but enough to be a serious menace (i'm persian) and.... 2) the direction of my beard is all OVER the place - my upper cheeks, mustache, bottom lip to chin are fine (in downward direction), but the other places are a little weird. i guess i'm not used to my 'unique' beard pattern. my question: a) would a safety razor be versatile enough so i can shave all of my hair in the same direction (even though my beard pattern is a little 'weird'? i'm thinking about starting my initiation into shaving.... also, i hate these new shavers. they give me too many razor bumps
Welcome to TSD! This is the best wet shave board on the planet! Yes, a safety razor will be versatile enough for you. There are a few folks around who have swirly hair growth patterns. It is all a matter of getting your beard prep nailed down and trying different techniques such as the J-hooking maneuver. In the meantime, enjoy shave school and keep asking questions!
welcome Kovert! Glad to have you aboard. Yes as Jeff said, a DE razor can give you a better shave. I would suggest checking out some of Mantic's shave videos on youtube to show you the right way to shave. They are a great tool in helping you decide whether or not you want to get into this arena, and hopefully you will, and it shows you great technique as well. Other than that, there are a BUNCH of knowledgeable people on this forum to answer your questions, mostly through their own trials and tribulations. Each face and beard is unique to its owner. Give it a try!
Glad to have you here, Good advice from the other members, I thing a saftey razor will serve you well.
Welcome to The Shave Den! A great community of guys and gals that enjoy wet shaving, I hope you enjoy your stay! While its not required, how about you hop over to the Newbies Section and give yourself a proper introduction thread, I'm sure you'll receive many warm welcomes from the friendly folks of this community. If you haven't found it yet, be sure to take a look at the Shave School Master Sticky List for loads of great info for the new wetshaver.
Welcome to TSD! I'd say with the exception of the "in the same direction" part you'll find what you're looking for from a DE razor and traditional lather.
As someone with thick, curly wiry hair, I think you will find the DE razor to be the solution. After years of ingrown hairs, DE shaving has been the panacea. Read all the posts you can, watch the videos, and give yourself plenty of time to shave. Being rushed leads to bad technique. Over time you will find the right combination for you. Good luck!
