Greeting from Wyoming. I'm new here, but I'm not new to shaving. I'm ready to stop using plastic razors and all that techie foo foo and get reacquainted with the safety razor and its accouterments. I'm probably going to start with a Gillette Fat Boy, and piece my kit together from there. Any one have a nice used one for sale? I don't need a collectible, but it'll need to be in excellent working order. I'm also in the market for the other pieces (brush, cup, etc.), but I'll likely buy them a little at a time with an eye to portability because I go camping a lot. It's VERY unlikely I'll buy a "starter" set-I usually try to buy what I want from the start, rather than a one size fits all set. Okay, your turn, and thanks in advance. Frank BTW-is it appropriate to post a WTB as a noob?
Welcome to The Shave Den, a great community of guys and gals that enjoy wet shaving, I hope you enjoy your stay! Be sure to sign up for the January Newbie Give-Away for a chance to win some great shave gear! Feel free to post in the Wanted forum, but please keep your requests limited to that section.
Welcome to the den. You seem to have an eye for taste. I got started with an AOS ( art of shaving set) for 100 bucks. preshave, cream, brush, and AS balm. They periodically run 25% coupons so be on the lookout for them. I use an old soup mug for a bowl and it lathers like a champ. Also Check out the TSD store. Great products and service.
Welcome to TSD. I've got a 1959 (E2 date code) shaver-grade Fatboy with your name on it, and some Israeli Personna blades too. The razor has been boiled, cleaned, boiled some more, cleaned some more.. but does have some spots on it and some plating loss. It's got a lazy door but doesn't affect its operation or the shave.. it closes down tight like it's supposed to. Just send me a PM and it's yours.. it'll only cost you $5 for the postage which will be Priority Mail Flat Rate Small Box. If you want it...
Welcome To TSD! This is the best wet shave board on the planet! As you can see here by Jody's most generous offer! Very generous of you Jody! :signs107
Welcome from Texas Welcome to the cozy confines of The Shave Den. Find a comfortable leather recliner and set a spell.
Welcome to the Den! There are a lot of razors you could start with, and a Fatboy is certainly one good one. Sorry, I'm keeping mine, even though I don't use it very often. You might find that Gillette Super Adjustables or Slims would give you a similar shave, and be available for less money, but you never know what you may find. Besides the WTB, you can check antique stores, flea markets, estate sales, etc. eBay is okay, but I think Fatboys tend to go for too much there right now unless you're both persistent and lucky. Acknowledging what you said about not liking "starter" sets, nevertheless, do you have CVS pharmacies there? They have a shave set which is essentially the same as this VdH set, but with the CVS name on it, and for only $7. The soap is good, and the handy little bowl is good for holding it, although if you want to bowl lather instead of face lather, you'll want something larger. You might want to buy an inexpensive Tweezerman badger brush to use instead of the VdH boar that comes with the set. Edit. Oops, I just noticed that Jody is offering you a Fatboy for very little indeed. Never mind what I said about the price.
I got the razor and blades yesterday and used it this morning. I used it on an adjustment of 3 and had a great shave. Thanks, Jody, for your kindness. I'll be sure to do likewise when I have opportunity.
This is the warmest, friendliest, and most generous place on the web...Enjoy your hang and shaves... Nice to have you aboard, and congrats to Jody for stepping up to the plate and slamming one out of the park in the Shave Den tradition...
