Between a point or round tip? Being a novice in every sense, I would imagine a str8 with a point to be an additional caution. I have read a few posts where the point just grazed my ________ when I moved from one area to another, causing a cut. I would think, that a point would come in handy in the tight areas compared to a round tip. Or, is it much like with DE razors, where you use what you have and just adapt to the personality of each razor? What is your preference in a str8 razor?
I definitely think one adapts to each razor, I have too many of each type of point and when ever I pick out a straight or a few for the week the only things that concern me are perhaps type of steel, brand or width but never the point. However I do a have couple razors a Livi and Iwasaki both with what seems exaggerated spike points and when I use them I will use much extra care around the ears or else if I forget they tend to remind me quickly. That said when I buy a new razor I seem to prefer anything but a round point if given a choice, but own many of them and they shave as good around edges as a spike point and are generally more forgiving.
No preference.. I like, own and use both kinds. For those just starting with straights however, I'd recommend a round point.
I have only used a round point other than a Magic shavette, and that is a beast in its own rite. Even so, with it, the tip of the razor is still slightly longer than the point of the blade, giving a more forgiving lapse of caution than a spike point str8 would give. Thanks guys for your responses, so far.
:sihns011 but I must admit, the two cuts I've received were from straights were from the tip. Now I'm fine but I think I still prefer the round point or at least I like the blade to have a slight smile.
Round point for beginners seems reasonable, but after that it is all aesthetics. I like the shape of a French point the most of all, but it so happens that my seven daily shavers are all square-pointed. So it goes... Chris
I have them both and I like them both, but the two worst cuts I gave myself I must admit were from a square point. I think the round point is a little more forgiving, and can get just about everywhere a square / spanish / whatever point can. Just don't let your wife / whoever drop something behind you when you are shaving with one!! Will N.
I agree 100% with Mark, no pref, own both, like both and a round point probably would be better for a beginner
I like round points. For some reason, I have a tendency to stick square points in near my ears. And the round points appeal to me aesthetically, too.
I seem to prefer round ends or square the best. I am forever nicking my earlobes with the spike points. Actually though, if you are careful both work well. You do have to watch out as most razors are around 3 inches in length and if you get used to that length and then try a longer spike point like a DD or some of the Sheffield's which are close to 3 1/2 inches, it is easy to dig that spike in, especially XTG, if you are not on the look out. Have fun, Lynn
I have one razor that delivers cuts and nicks like Domino's delivers pizza. My solution? I muted the tip just a bit. Problem solved.
I like round point, but I have shaved with a squared point a time or two. Actually only a time or two.. since my 5th shave was last night. *S*
