    Hey all!

I've been lurking for a few months now, and thought it was time to officially join the board. This has been such a useful resource in learning how to properly use classic shaving methods. Thank you all for your help.

So far, I've been using my DE Merkur 23C, and Gillette slim adjustable. I'm falling in love with the Feather blades, but they can sure cut you up when you're not paying attention.

I'm working up the courage to try a straight. I just received a Cactus straight in awesome shape to learn on. Now I just need to get a strop.

    FIRST: WELCOME TO THE FORUM.

SECOND: Nicks, cuts, and weepers are unacceptable.

    THIRD: Here is the rhetoric:

    Preparation, Preparation, Preparation...
    Technique, Technique, Technique...
No Pressure, No Pressure, No Pressure...
Let the razor do the work...
Take your time, relax and enjoy your shave...

The Feather may not be the best razor blade with which to begin. Most recommend saving it till later in your shaving experience. Some of the less aggressive razor blades are recommended but as usual razor blades are always a YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) issue.

I would also recommend you stick with one type razor (DE or straight) before moving on to another. Practice your technique and take it slow and easy. After all, "It's not a race, it's your face."

    Welcome and enjoy.

Thanks all for the warm welcome!

    RascoMS-

Thanks for your comments. I agree with your sentiments to not start with the feather, and I didn't. So far I have tried Dorco, Astra, Gillette 7 O'clock yellows, Derby's, and in the last week, a feather (after about 2 months of practice). I do well with the feathers, and the shave is the most satisfying of any of them, but I am still having trouble getting the angle right at my adam's apple, and usually end up with a little nick there or a touch of razorburn every 3rd shave (getting better though).

I do fully agree with your statement on waiting a bit before starting the straights. To be honest, they scare me a bit. Maybe in another couple months I'll feel comfortable enough to start up with a straight. Until then, the DE razors are awesome.
