After you shave do you take the blade out of your DE or leave the blade in when you store the razor ? Are there pro's or con's to doing either ?
Leave it in the razor. Never thought of doing anything else with it, 'cept toss it when I'm done. Actually, I take it out of the razor I just shaved with, hand strop it, then put it into the razor I'll be using the next day. Thinkin' 'bout it, though, I DO NOT like the idea of a loose blade floating around in my medicine cabinet waiting to be put back into a razor.
I always rinse the soap and stubble off and then pat dry the blade, in the hand towel, after shaving. I feel that this process slows oxidation (rust) on the edge and makes the blade last longer. Depending if the blade came in a wrapper or dispenser, I will either put it back in the wrapper or store it in the rinsed and dry razor. I've done this after hearing a fellow on the radio discussing how oxidation is the reason that razor blades get dull. I tried it and I get more shaves out of a blade than others seem to get. YMMV.
I keep my blade in the razor. All I do after the shave is a rinse (of course) and I loosen the handle a bit so that teh blade does not stay under tension until the next shave.
I leave my blade in the razor. I do loosen the doors, rinse with hot water, then dip it in alcohol. Pat it dry and hang it up, ready for the next go 'round.
I leave it in. The blade is only in there for a few days and I don't know of any reason not to keep it in as I don't use carbon steel blades.
Left in loose after alcohol swish. Unless, I use shave oil and gum everything up...out it comes and I remember why I don't use shave oil often.
You may have detected a trend here. The only blades I take out between shaves are carbon steel ones that I sometimes use in single edge razors. Everything else I leave in the razor.
Thank you for your responces I had noticed that if I took the blade out of the razor between shaves and dried it the blade seamed to last longer. I was wonering if others had the same outcome.
I was under the impression from your original post that you were wondering where people stored the blade when they stored the razor - together or separate.
I replace my Personna Medical Prep blade every Sunday.. I do lossen the Mulhe R106 and rinse with hot water to store. I don't rotate razors or blades. Beware of the man with one gun.. I do rotate brushes based on the soap or cream of the day.
I was just logging on here to post the same question; glad I saw this thread. I usually rinse the blade (out of the razor) in cold water, then i pat dry w/ a towel, and drop into a closed tub of rubbing alchohol. I thought this would be best and would slow oxidization... However, I've noticed that my blades do seem to really dull after the first shave. I just switched to using Feather blades. The first shave was amazing. The sharpness of them made the shave so much easier. I stored it in rubbing alcohol; but on my 2nd shave w/ the blade, it was very dull and I could feel it pulling at every hair. I figured I'd come here and ask if I was doing something wrong and if there was a better way to store the blades between shaves to avoid this dulling. I've heard of storing the blades in oil, but haven't liked how hard it is to clean after you take it out. Also, how do you store the blades that come in the packs that are unused yet? I find the sharpness and quality of shaves to really differ between each blade in a pack, and I'm not sure if they're dulling or oxidizing while i'm storing them... I usually just keep them in a plastic bag in a drawer in the bathroom...
First, lose the plastic bag for storing your unused blades, especially in a high moisture environment like a bathroom. It holds the moisture in and that is not good. I do not store my blade in alcohol - only the wrapper (dry) or back in a cleaned and dry razor. Try this and see if you get an improvement.
I leave it in the razor as well after just a hot water rinse. So my Father leaves the whole razor (head down) in a small cup of vodka when finished. He says he notices longer razor life as well.Though I haven't personally tried this.
