This weekend there is an antique market sale where I live. I went and found this GEM for $5. Given it was cased and looking pretty much new, I got it (there were a few injectors, but I don't use them). The case is in good condition and the razor is in great condition. The head has no heavy scratches and looks like a mirror. It is the 1912 Pat. date and is made in England. However the handle looks a bit funny in my oppinion. I don't know much about GEMs, I have a Featherweight and a Lather Catcher, but that's where my knowledge ends. The handle is very light and seems to be made out of aluminum or another light weight metal. Is this the original handle or would it be a customn one? I asked the lady selling it and she stated that was how she got it when she bought it used. If you could let me know...that would be great. I have heard GREAT things about these razors, and think I will be using it this week! Thanks! Here are some pictures of it.
Well the patent may be from 1912, but that case sure isn't. I don't have all of my GEM dating quite on, but the 1912 style carried on for quite some time (which is why that model you have there is often called a GEM 1912). The only real variation they had on the 1912 involved a number of different handles. What you have there is a handle that I believe is from the mid 20s to mid 30s. There was an ornate version, too, with interesting scrollwork. It is indeed an original handle, though. Oh, and for the record, the Made In England GEMs are quite rare. Most GEMs say "Made in the USA by GEM Cutlery"
Glad to hear it is the original handle. The handle has been scored as you can see in the pics, and I understand why. It gets pretty slippery when the handle gets wet. I used it this morning and it was great! It is light like myh lather catcher and not a heavy chunk of metal like my valet. Also, I thought most of these said 'Made in the USA'. Thanks for the info!
