After much much consideration... as big a fan as I am, that kit is overpriced. I say order the cream off Amazon with free shipping, get a cheaper, better brush, find a cheaper, better aftershave, and don't even fuss with preshave oil.
Thanks for the feedback. I ended up getting some C.O. Bigelow shave cream from BBW instead (3 for the price of 2). Although, I was tempted to get the Jack Black synthetic shave brush from Sephora for $85.00! I walked away to fight that temptation another day.
I just heard about the new Muhle synthetic brush - a whole new type of badger-like fiber. I'd look into that before buying the Jack Black.
Yeah, a premium brush is definitely on my search for list. I ended up finding a private labeled VDH premium shaving kit at CVS for $3.59 on clearance. It includes the VDH boar brush, a cake of shave soap and a shave bowl. Good enough for starters. I will check out the Muhl brush, but have also been looking at the Sabi badgers on Shave a Buck. Cheers!
The Everest cream I used today is one of the cheapest Russian-produced creams you can find, but I'll say this--it is super.
In my opinion the quality of shave cream stops improving relative to price at about the C.O. Bigelow point. Past around $10 for a 7.5oz tube and you're just paying for a brand name that's not any better.
You can find sales 3-4 times a year at the AOS store and other vendors. I even got a $10 off from Groupon that got me a jar of AOS lemon cream for $12. I used this yesterday and got 3 soap refills for $16 ea. make copies of the bar code page and go in the store if ones near you. http://www.theartofshaving.com/newsletters/20110526/nonrazor/
