I have been using my Fat Boy and Slim Adjustable on a regular rotation for the last two weeks. I have adjusted my hold on both razors which has improved the shaves. For those that both the Fat Boy and a Slim Adjustable which one do you prefer?
I prefer the Slim because i find it more manouvarable. If I had to have only one safety razor it would be the Slim.
In just looking and not measuring, and considering that they are using the same blade, I think the head size is the same. I like the larger diameter of the FB handle, but I like the little extra length of the Slim. They both shave the same to me. I guess it's the feel in your hand. The best of both worlds would be the fat handle that is longer! I would even prefer an extra inch. I'm still trying to get used to the shorter handles of the DE razors, switching from the Mach 3. If I HAD to choose, I think there would be a slight nod to the Slim.
I once had four Gillette Adjustable (2 Fatboys, 1 Slim, 1 Super). I now have just the one Fatboy. I liked all of the razors, but found them all very similar. So, I kept my favorite and sold or gave away the rest. The only part that really set the Fatboy at the top is how it works for head shaving.
Hi there, Although I've used the slim and super adjustable in the past, the fatboy's my go to razor. Matter of fact, years ago the slim was my favorite razor, which I used for a good six months straight. That changed when I shaved with a fatboy, and the slim was put away forever. These are two totally different razors as far as performance goes. A lot of that is due to the different head designs.....the fatboy being more rounded. There's other things that affect how it performs as well, but the head's the main thing. Some people find it the better fit, and some prefer how a slim feels. As a weird thing, the fatboy tames a Feather blade perfectly for me, which the slim doesn't do. Nice typing at you, Martin
Hi there, My first DE razor was a super adjustable, and it was a smart choice. The long handle and adjustable feature makes it a good one to start with, and actually lots of members have that type in their rotation. Heh, my blade selection wasn't so hot, but I didn't find that out for a while. I think every new DE shaver is kinda shocked at how damn short most handles are. I sure thought that way, and that's one reason I went with the super instead of something else. Once I switched to a 'normal' size handle (the slim), it took a while to figure out how to hold the goofy thing. By now it's all muscle memory. Once in a great while I'll use a razor with a long handle (4 inches or more), and it feels so weird in my hand having all that extra room to grip the thing. I have to adjust my technique to compensate. If you stick with the DE thing, the short handle issue will go away after a while. martin
True, and a good point there Martin. :happy088 I originally purchased a Merkur long handle classic razor, thinking that with large hands the longer handle would be more comfortable for me, but several years on I find that I can switch between short and long handled razors without thinking about it or any discomfort.
I've already started getting used to the shorter handles. The first few shaves were hard to get used to. I bought the EJ for my first razor, and found the slick handle much harder to hold. After using other razors with textured handles, I went back to the EJ and found that it wasn't as hard to hold. I think part of it is just getting used to a little different style of shaving, a different grip, shorter handles all together makes it hard to get used to. I can see that after getting a little experience, everything gets easier! Your earlier post talked about the Fatboy and Slim having a different shaped head. I didn't notice that. I'll go back and compare again.
I am the happy recipient of one of ChemErik's extra Fatboys and love it! You are still the man Erik! I haven't tried the slim yet, but am loving the FB mostly because of the heft and how much more substantial it feels compared to most DE's. I also find I'm getting less irritation from it than the SS I was using. I'll have to keep an eye out for a slim maybe in six months or something once I have learned the Fatboy.
I've never been very impressed with the fatboys. So I'd give the edge to the slim. I'd give more of an edge to the Super adjustable and even more of an overwhelming edge to the Futur. YMMV
Good to hear you're enjoying it! BTW - that's the only Fatboy I've given away and the only one I planned.
Fat Boy for me I favor the Fat Boy on account of the thick handle and the more extreme arc to the head. That arc seems to agree with me better once I dial in my preferred aggression level (5). However, the Slim is also a fine razor of comparable build quality. I would use my Slim on occasion still, but my wife has procured it for her lovely legs - so far she's my only DE convert.
