Never knew shaving was so dangerous! Thanks for showing the ad, I have never seen anything for lysol in shaving before in antique shops or pictures. I guess it wasn't very popular.

I was just reading a thread last night about mixing ingredients

in after shave- we all have heard about adding some witch hazel to our splash on.

I am wondering if Lysol has anything in it that should not be applied to human skin? I wonder what it would do to the richness of the cream?

I do like the "scent" in a clinical sort of way.

Up until I had to liquidate my collection, I had a sample tube of the Lysol shaving cream. It was a tiny tube.. only about 2 inches inch long, half an inch wide. It had been used but there was still a little in the tune that was dried hard.

I imagine the chemical makeup of Lysol in 1919 was different than the chemical makeup of Lysol in 2011. And I don't even know how one would go about finding out the chemicals used in 1919, even if one had a mint New Old Stock tube of the cream since back then there were no laws regarding companies having to list ingredients of their products.

Here's another 1919 advert for it. These old adverts are interesting reads, especially for a product like this where today, we would think they were nutjobs for adding Lysol to shaving cream! It gives you a look back in time into the mindset of these companies at that time...

That era was still churning out the snake oil salesman. Of course the snake oil salesman still exist today, in the form of infomercials.:happy102

While not shaving related, another good example of a company whose product was used for something totally different than it is today... Listerine. In the 1920s, it was promoted for "feminine hygiene", aka douche, as seen here. I guess one really can't argue about a minty-fresh hoo-hoo. :rofl

Speaking of Lysol, it was also promoted as a douche.

    And I believe

Aqua Velva started out as a mouthwash.

And Listerine was a sergical anticeptic in WW1

I'm kind of surprised they don't try this angle again nowadays, considering all the germophobes out there carrying little bottles of Purell everywhere they go. You'd think the black death was still going around or something.
