    Dale,

See my comments posted in another forum. In addition to sharpness (that needs to be improved; I noticed some razor burn around the jawbone)

I continued late last night to clean and hone this razor. I spend another hour cleaning out the muck; this razor was really tarnished with a couple of rust spots. I had to stop since I ran out of cleaning pads. I selected the Naniwas to hone the razor, it was dull as dull can be...it glided over my arm hair without cutting one of 'em. Started with the 1K without slurry to set the bevel and did not tape the spine, the blade is a tad warped towards the heel; but not too bad...x strokes with moderate pressure on the heel took care of this problem. I then continued to the 3K,5K and finally 8K and polished on the 10K; inspected the bevel under direct light and it was really shinny. I test shaved this morning, it gave me a close shave but I am not pleased with the results; I feel sharpness could be improved, I am going to take it to the stones once again. I will post pics tonight when I get home. Take care. HOG

    Face
    Razor- Merkur Progress
    Blade- Derby Extra
    Soap- C&E Sienna
    Brush- Frank Shaving Fine Badger
    AS- Nivea Sensitive Balm

    Head
Razor- Gilette Sensor Excel (still too scared to try DE shaving the noggin)
    Blade- Publix brand Excel cartridge
Cream- Edge Brand Goo-in-a-Can (the green flavor!)
    AS- Nivea Sensitive Balm

Today was a good'un. Tried to be different and give face-lathering with soap a go. Worked better than bowl-lathering for the soap. Soaps are still challenging for me. Also tried a different approach to under my chin. I can never get it close down there, regardless of directions, but today went better than usual. Ended up with one or two little weepers, but I've just about accepted those as par for the course.

I'm hoping it's the stainless adjustable he's been working on but my luck, it's probably not.

All the same but the soap is Williams. My second shave with it, I feel the room for the improvement of the lather it gives. Much better then my first try. Very close shave.

#1 on that, I tried a few of their house brand soaps in the past, all were less than stellar. I did melt one puck down and combined it with VDH and was able to get acceptable results with it.

Hot water on face, this accomplished two things: it woke me up and it softened the beard for the shave; I then applied Proraso preshave cream. Boker Good as Gold. It was late last night and this HOG was honing this razor using the Naniwas. I set the bevel with the 1K and continued with a progression through the 10K. The razor was sharp but needs to be taken once again to the hones; I just remind my readers that the blade was dull as a butter knife, so there was a lot of work to be done; also this razor is 100 years old and probably hasn't seen a hone in a long time, so sharpness on this blade can be improved; I also had some razor burn, no problemo; I have been there before.

I haven't used an Iridium in a while and felt like breaking one out. The shave wasn't as nice as with the Gillette 7oc Super Platinum I used yesterday. Still a decent shave with nice cooling shave cream and balm.

Pre-shave soap: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
    Razor: Merkur 23C
    Blade: Astra Keramik
    Brush: Simpson Colonel X2L Best
    Soap: Valobra Soft Soap (Almond)
    A/S: Dickinson's Witch Hazel, 4711 Splash

This was the second shave with this blade, which I had found in my stash of assorted blades left over from samples. It performed very well, giving a close and comfortable shave, although I prefer the Astra Superior for its extra smoothness, at least in my experience. However, I could happily use the Keramiks if they were still available.

The Brush is one of the two New #6's I'm breaking in. I'm very pleased as to how this knot is turning out. (I believe it will be a good brush) So, I placed it into this vintage handle. The other #6, well let's say it's a little thin in the knot (maybe too much glue) and warrants further evaluations and more break in time.

    Great shaves today, Gentlemen.

The Nord-ost cream and aftershave balsam are fantastic--they're both made by the same company which makes the Tet-a-tet stuff. They have a classic and nice scent, and the cream lathers like a maniac. It also gives a nice cooling effect. The aftershave balsam is even more cooling. This shave was wonderful. ;) :D
