Hello I have been reading around the forums for a while now(just became a member thou) and was just recently given a merker HD with a 10 pack of feather razor blades. I was/am a little hesitant about using the feather blades due the the samurai sword reputation they hold. But I decided to take the plunge. First DE shave was 1 week ago and was not as bad as I expected even for a noob like me. A few nicks many mainly on the neck but all was well. Even with the nicks I actually enjoyed shaving for the first time. Second shave was today and once again shaving the face went along with no problems but the neck was something else. My neck technique obviously needs work but its a learning curve. Also just curious is the merker hd with feather a good beginner combo to use or is it for more advanced shavers? I want to try out a few other kinds of blades that would be more forgiving for beginners. Anyhow just wanted to thank the wealth of knowledge that this forum has provided me and all the other beginners out there.
Welcome to the cozy confines of The Shave Den. Find a comfortable leather recliner and set a spell. As to blades, you really need to get a good sampler pack because what works for me may not work for you. Don't get one that has too many of the same blade because once you find the one or two that you prefer, you don't want to get stuck with a volume of blades you don't want. Take a look at this recent thread for leads on blades. http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24854 Good fortune.
Welcome to TSD. A sample should get you on your way to great shaves as well as a great shaving experience. I know there are many blades out there but when you find some that work for you. It is just wonderful.
I haven't been able to buy the sample pack yet. But from the 4 shaves I have done I can tell that my techniue is getting better. With the cartridge razes I had to pull down on it or it would just hang on my beard. With the DE razor I just let the weight do it no pulling at all just some "steering" on where I want it to cut.
That is good. No pressure is one of the most important things with DE shaving. Will help with cuts as well as razor burn. If the blade you have now works great just keep at it.
Good advice. I lucked out with the Astra SP's as my first "real" blades (after the CVS brand). I've thought about trying a sampler pack but keep thinking: "why?" I'm getting great shaves with the blades I've got. I guess it could really go either way, if you want to keep looking to see if you've been missing something there's certainly no harm in that but if you have something that works for you....keep with it!
Yea the hardest part is my neck because all my hair on my left side grows to the left and on the right side it grows to the right. So that's where I'm trying to get the technique down now.
