I have the Naniwa 3, 8 & 12k Super Stones. I'm very happy with these. Now I'm looking to add a 1k. I was all set to go with the Naniwa 1k SS but while bouncing around the sites I read the Naniwa Chosera Waterstones would be the better choice at 1k.

    Opinions please..

Either stone should serve you well on setting the bevel. I'm not a stone expert but at the 1k level the differences may be hard for normal folks to see a measurable difference. :o

I have the 1K Nani and its a great stone for restorers because it is nice to mirror finished razors. If you want a work horse though for rough razors, I would actually get the Norton 1k because in my opinion its harder and faster. I have heard fantastic things about the Chosera stones and have not worked with the 1K, but based on the other grits I have worked with, I am sure its a great stone.

You have to understand that most of the "HUGE" praise is coming from Professional Honers for the Chosera 1k.
The biggest question you have to ask your self is do you NEED a bevel setter that costs 3 times as much as any of the others...

It doesn't set bevels better, it sets bevels faster, and shows way less wear doing it....

I'm kind of AD about products brands being consistant. I'm very, if I like it, I will stick with it. I like the Naniwa 3, 8, 12k stones and I'm not even sure I NEED a 1k but I WANT a 1K (I suspect before it's over I'll have them all). Sometimes reading too much just causes confustion. So, I went ahead and went with the SS 1k and a Illinois Russian Leather Razor Strop.

Thanks for your help.. hopefully I can post some restore pics before long.

    Good solid choices...

I have recommended for quite awhile that if I could only have one set (God forbid) it would be the Naniwa SS as they do better on picky razors then everything else... Any set, hones an easy razor, but when they get finicky and chippy the Naniwa SS are my goto set..

I have used the Illinois #827 as my after honing strop for years, yep good solid choices there for sure IMHO :)

Glen, I've watched your Naniwa honing videos more than a few times. Do you have a stropping video?

Not really some of the newer Vids on my channel the one on the Chinese and the Coticule show stropping but I don't go into a real explanation of it...

Alan/AFDavis11 on SRP has a fantasic stropping video up that I personally recommend often because Alan is one of the most accomplished people on a Strop that I had the pleasure of meeting.. He does a great job of explaining it too it is on Youtube I will try and link it...
