Hi, this is my First Purchase of a Straight Razor I think it called Goldedge Double Duck or something like that, Anyways, what is a Razor like this Worth? I Am Curious, once its restored in shaving condition? i haven't gotten it yet but i was told it came in original old box and looks pretty new. so i am curious about price want to make sure i didn't over pay for it. $35.00 Shipping Included Thanks to all that Respond.
Need Pics to see condition. Dubl Ducks are fine razors and considering going prices on ebay you got a good deal. Is there any rust or black rust near edge? are the scales(handles) in good shape? Pins tight? did it say shave ready? If not shave ready you need to send it off to Pro honer like Gssixgun (Glen) for hone. Ducks are great razors others will chime in. B
Its hard to tell the condition of the blade from that view. Double Ducks are great razors and usually make fantastic shavers. Get it honed by a pro for starters. Then later on get it restored. Good Luck!
IMO you got a good deal from what your pic is showing. As long as there is a salvageable blade, that price was a deal.
Honing and Restoring ? How much does it cost to get it honed and Restored? not exactly, but just an average price to do both, also i am sure there is shipping involved that add to the cost so all this is to be considered
Glen, gssixgun here at TSD, has been recommended for honing and restoration. I second that. He's done both types of work for me with outstanding results. A great guy to work with, as well. I believe honing alone is $20. Add more if there has to be any prep work to the blade. My custom restore with new scales was $80. I am more than satisfied. Here's his website at GemStar Customs.
I would say you got a really nice deal. While the picture isn't that great, it didn't look like the blade has serious rust issues. I couldn't tell if that was gold or rust on the tang and pivot area. Unless the scales are cracked, you probably wouldn't need to replace them. You could send the razor to Glen and even with the cost of cleaning and sharpening it, you would have paid less than a comprable new razor.
Ok guys thanks for the tips, i should be getting it sometime next week, once i receive it i will take some nicer pics and post them up. Thanks Again all
Glen will shoot you straight (pun slightly intended) too. If there is a fatal flaw, he won't just do some BS work and charge you for it, he'll let you know so all you'll be out is shipping. Besides being a magician with the str8s, he's a fair business man. He also did a vintage resftore on mine and my scales were able to be salvaged (horn too! I was so glad ) and his rate was very resonable. With that resto and another honing on a different razor it was like $85 bucks or so and the razors were shave ready, as expected, upon return.
Nice straight. As previously advised, ship it off to Glen. He just did a restore and a sharpen for me. He will let you know upfront if there are any concerns. You will not be disappointed, and his rates are reasonable.
A Newbie looking for help Looking to buy my first straight razor and need some advice. I am pretty serious about putting some money into this because I see it as a good investment. I am looking to buy my first razor from here: classicshaving.com/catalog/item/725412/8464988.htm Would anyone have any suggestions, opinions, good advice, etc? My main concern, is that I'll have a bad experience, and won't like it. Any tips on first time straight razor shaving? Thanks for the help!
Ditto. I sent my first straight bought off Ebay to Glen and he told me straight away that it was junk and there was nothing he could do for it. At the same time, Glen gave me a Torrey for the price of honing to replace my junker, which I took him up on. I still have the Torrey, and sent it back to him for custom scales awhile later. That Torrey remains one of best shaves to this very day.
Honestly, Look here too http://www.straightrazordesigns.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=78 If you are after a New razor set up, Lynn and Don are very hard to beat, and yes they are friends of mine.. But Lynn has honed more razors then everyone else combined... JMHO To everyone else many thanks for the trust you all put in me, it is much appreciated and I will continue to do my very best and make sure I always earn it...
Agreed. I have been to Lynn's place and got to see him in action when honing. He is always willing to help someone get started. Great guy. IMHO
gssixgun, Thanks for the advice. Looks like I can get a great blade for a better price. What was your first straight razor that you bought?
It was 30 years ago from a place called the Naked Edge in Denver Colorado and what I remember for sure is that it said... "Finest Sheffield Steel" on it which I thought was good since my Hockey skates had Sheffield Steel blades too
