Isn't it mostly just mineral oil with some fragrance added?

When I am getting dressed up, I love the smell and feel of Brylcreem.

do it the old way: dont wash it. even water rarely sees my hair.

as soon as i get a cut (bald fade ever 1 - 1 1/2 weeks) i put a mix of castor oil and bag balm in my hair. then if needed, shea butter solid.

judge me all you want, but my hair looks awesome, no flakes/birdnests/etc. and has no smell :D

What are the best / most popular hair tonics? Which ones smell the best? Do they leave a greasy residue on the hair?.......not a fan of that.

Ok, I have to ask, what IS the purpose of tonic? Just an old fashioned kind of mousse, like, to hold it in place? A scent? What?

I would think it's more like a conditioner.

The ones I have seen were made with mineral oil and fragrance. I would think that would make your hair extremely greasy and be hard to wash out.

I am probably more "senior" than most here, so I will tell you what it was.....

Hair tonic (Vitalis for example)was/is usually a mixture of mineral oil, alcohol and fragerence. It was usually used by gents that had fine or lighter textured hair. As it was a "light hold" type of product and worked well with fine, straight hair.

Hair cream (Brylcream) was/is of a thicker consistency. Thus, it has more "holding" power if you will. Gents with thicker, heavier hair usually used a cream, as it provided more holding power. So, for thicker, heavier hair, you used a heavier product.

Hair Oil, (Wildroot for example). This product was for gents with really heavy, wavy hair, or perhaps fellows who might have slightly curly hair. It provided the most holding power, to keep hair neatly groomed.

Now, all of this suggested usage, was dependent on the amount of the product used for each application. Some with light hair could use Wildroot, however needed to apply is very lightly, or else it would weigh the hair down, and make it matted. Not applying too much product was the trick to using each of these items, as they all provided control, shine, and a well groomed look. The perfect application, would not mat the hair down, but rather give it shine, body and make it lay well on the head. Hair that was matted down, and stuck to the head, with excessive oil, tonic or cream, was thought to be very low class, and bordering on not being a cleanly person.

Has anyone tried any of the Pinaud line of tonics? I am thinking of trying the Clubman but really want the mineral oil for the shine.

Whats that verse about judging others' ??
something about before you do so, check that plank in your eye ??
    found it: Matt 7:5

" You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye".

    I like that one.......:)

    HEY!!
If it works for YOU, Great.

Ive gotten away from Brylcreem and now I use VO5 (for grey hair) and then hot air dry followed by a styling paste or pomade for hold and finish.

Yes, I was wondering about these as well, like the:

Clubman Eau de Quinine Hair Tonic
also, I was wondering about the Clubman / Jeris Osage rub....how are the scents on these? Do the scent's linger? are they invigorating to the scalp....like a menthol tingle?

I like that one too :happy088

I always thought the Osage Rub for bald heads and faces but dont know. It seems that is could only be used as an AS splash. I love the stuff on the face but scared to put it in my hair! Its one of those 400ml bottles that will last forever!

i use Lucky Tiger 3 purpose everyday. the oil is really light not like the heavy
mineral oil that is used in Jeris. i like the scent but some people may not
i reminds me of the old barber shop smell. some say it smells alot like Vitalis . it does give good control and conditions the hair and scalp.
the trick is use just a small amount to start and add more if you need it
use too much and it will be greasy
    cheers
