I've been in a quest for a decent shaving bowl for lathering. I started with a nice, medium-size ceramic bowl I picked up at Bed, Bath and Beyond, but it hasn't really done the trick for me, most because of it's smooth interior. I found something at Pier One a few weeks ago, but it dies a tragic death in the sink after a case of the slick-fingered dropsies last week. This morning, I made a stop at a local Goodwill in Arlington, Virginia, just to see if anything interesting turned up. And I found the bowl in the photos. Nice size, with a textured outer surface for gripping and a circular ridge pattern in the base for what I hope will allow for working up a nice creamy lather. All that hunting in retail stores, and this cost me $1.96. I say "as is" is just right!
I snagged myself a similar "as-is" from the Goodwill myself, just a few weeks ago. Quite a nice thing and I paid a bit more than you at a full $2 I replaced a plain ol' Correlle bowl I got from Wallyworld and the extra ridges do seem to make it build lather a bit better. Problem is, now I have a one off bowl I really like so if it breaks, I'm out a really cool bowl..... Oh well, I know where to go for the good bowls-Goodwill!
I know what you mean about breaking things like this. I'll just try to be careful with it, considering the hard work someone put out to make it in the first place! And, you're right about Goodwill and similar places...they had a nice selection of things like this that would have served just fine.
