1. I had a rather disturbing shave this morning. I decided to try shaving the way my 24 yr old does:
Wash and lather with Dial bar soap(yes you heard right) then drag a Personna 3-blade disposable across my face in a wtg motion.
The disturbing part is that I got a very quick, smooth, and non irritating shave! I was shocked. Even when I applied my Pinaud Bay Rum after my Walmart Witch Hazel -Nothing- no ouch, no burn, nothing. My face is neither dry nor irritated in the least. And very smooth. Scary! I'm beginning to think that my old school method shaving is part myth and part urban legend because this was the quickest, smoothest shave I've had in a long while. I will, however, continue to soldier on with my Dorco equipped '39 Tech plowing through my Badger brush applied Williams lathered stubble and do two passes at least for the sake of Tradition , but I gotta tell ya my kid's method seems o.k.!
  2. I'm shocked and appalled!!!

But full-disclosure compels me to confess that I, too, did this same thing, maybe 25 years ago, while traveling.
And I still use Dial bar soap.
  3. Dial is a tallow based soap so it should provide more than adequate protection.

The ingredients to Dial are as follows:

    Active Ingredient: Triclocarban
Inactive Ingredients: SOAP (SODIUM COCOATE*, SODIUM PALM KERNELATE*, SODIUM PALMATE*, SODIUM TALLOWATE*), WATER, TALC, COCONUT ACID*, PALM ACID*, TALLOW ACID*, PALM KERNEL ACID*, PEG-6 METHYL ETHER, FRAGRANCE, GLYCERIN, SORBITOL, SODIUM CHLORIDE, PENTASODIUM PENTETATE, TETRASODIUM ETIDRONATE, YELLOW 5, YELLOW 8, RED 4

Now as to the Personna 3-blade. You have learned to master a DE razor which requires an improved level of technique. That translates to your experience with this razor.

Four major areas of concern when shaving and this is the order in which I place the priority of success in shaving:
    1. Skin / Beard Type (Mine is Sensitive Skin / Medium to Course Beard) (Worse combination by the way) - This is a fixed item that you cannot change.
The next two I hold equal or so close I cannot differentiate by much.
2/3. Technique - This can be varied by the user. Changed depending on hardware and preparation.
2/3. Preparation (including lathering) - This can be varied by the user with different products soaps, creams, oils, application methods, steam, cold water, etc.
    4. Hardware (razors / blades) - This is a substitutable item (you cannot generally change the design of an existing item very much but you can change the item out to gain improvements).

Since you understand your skin, have mastered DE techniques, understood about proper lathering to hydrate the skin, then the razor is all that is left.
I use Trac II / Atra class razors on my head and sometimes on the face and I have found that these are much better razors when my technique was improved by DE/Injector use.
  4. My 1st reaction was to cringe when I saw "Dorco". For me, I have never been able to get an irritation free shave from them...
  5. I guess I just don't have sensitive skin because I get just about the same smooth, irritation free shaves from Dorco, Super Max, Topaz, and Wilkinson blades. But nothing as smooth as the shave I got from that Personna Triple disposable!
  6. I'm tryin' it. I don't have the razor you speak of, but I have some dial bar soap. Should be...interesting? It'll at the very least teach me how to get by in a pinch if I every find myself without any proper shaving soap or cream.
  7. I too have used bar soap in the past, in a pinch. The key word to the post above is "quick". We live in a quick generation. We no longer write letters, we send email. We no longer wait to get home to make that phone call, we use the cell phone. We no longer use the cell phone to talk, that takes to much time, we text. Everything is quick this and quick that. I have few pleasures left in life other than my family and my DE shaving. The DE shave reminds me of good times gone bye. Harkens me back to the 50's when we were not in a hurry, could set on the front porch and visit, and talk about anything other than politics.

Treasure your time with the blade and brush, for one day that to will be gone.
  8. What nobody wants to admit is that, as far as end result only, you can get a perfect, BBS shave with a can of Barbasol, a disposable cartridge razor, and a splash of Brut. Fortunately there's more to life than end results.
swarden43 and Nick A like this.
  9. That's true.....but why drive automatic when there are standards still left in the world.
  10. I totally agree with you. I was only making an observation about the end result vs time invested. I too treasure my old school DE shave every day.
  11. Ditto
  12. I've never been able to get irritation free BBS shaved with any can and cartridge. Of course, I've never been able to achieve a completely irritation free BBS with a DE either, but it is better. I haven't tried cartridges again since my technique has improved, so maybe it would be better. But as stated, that's not the point. I'm hoping straight shaving is the answer I've been looking for, otherwise I guess I'm doomed to never having a completely red free neck...
  13. I think this thread is kind of proof that technique is the most important part of shaving. Once you get that down, you're pretty much free to use any products you like, and you'll get a good shave as well as enjoy the process.
