So, does anyone have a comparison between the Shapton's and the Norton's? Also, what the heck would you use a 30K Shapton for?

I've used the 30K Shapton, but wouldn't recommend it, except if your looking for an excuse to get divorced.

Thanks for the link. Ya, at $475 I would call it a case for divorce. The Shaptons are not cheap.

Dr. Chris Moss seems to think highly of the 30k Shapton.
Way out of my price range, so I'll stick with a coticle or thuringen. They are expensive enough.

You have to understand that this thread was done back in 2007 much has been learned in that short two years...

Many of us now use Shapton GS stones from the 220-30k back then many people didn't know the tricks of the stone...

The 30k is probably still over kill unless you have a serious case of honing OCD
But we do know how to use it now...

The Norton full set at still less than $120 shipped from Amazon is hard to beat

The Naniwa SS are a step up in price and quality

then the Shapton GS are an even bigger step up in price but they are a different stone altogether...
