I've been sporting a 'stache and goatee for over two months now. It looks nice but it's actually more work then just shaving! I wonder if there are half width blades and razors available to maintain the area around the "soul patch"? What is the best way to keep sharp, clean lines?
Merkur sells a mustache DE, along with blades for it. I keep a 'stache myself. Didn't find much use for the little trimmer. Besides, I didn't like the proprietary blades you have to use. I've learned how to maneuver a full size razor around and get good results. Others may come along with some tips that will work for you.
When I sported a goat, I went to Big Lots and found a 3 pack of Noxema disposable bikini razors for under a buck. The head is less than 1" wide. One razor lasts forever on soul patch cleanup and is the perfect size that purpose.
Thinking about it, using any razor around the 'stache or goatee is like driving a car - you can't see the bumper or tires, but after awhile you get a feel for where they are at any given time. Key word - PRACTICE. You'll get it.
I'm lucky, my hair doesn't grow at all on the sides of the soul patch, so I don't have to worry about shaving it. I just keep the soul patch thinned out with the beard trimmer, and shave the little area directly between it and where the goatee starts. I've just recently gone back to full beard, while still wet shaving around the lines. That's a little more work than just shaving it all would be, but I grow a great beard and I really love it. I get a lot of comments on it too. Most are positive, but some are like, "Oh ... your beard is ... really getting long."
with some practice shaving with my regular de i can work the goatee . lately trying to master the "41" in that area has become another challenge. but it's all do-able
I did have a full beard, but shaved it and kept the goatee when I started again with a DE ..... it's just that the Schick fits so well to trim under the lip !!
It is rather difficult, and I still struggle with it. Sometimes if I'm not paying attention, I don't cut into it enough from day to day and it gets broader on the sides and longer down my neck. At which point I have to reshape it. Sometimes I cut into the edges too much and have to reconfigure the look of it a bit for a few days until I get it right. Without it, I look like I'm 12 years old while I'm actually 37. Of course I look like a balding 12 year old!
I had a mustache and goatee for years but I very recently gave up on maintaining them and shaved everything.
