I started with the ej89l and its my only de , then I tried the se 1912 , then went on a ebay hunt added a , eveready 1914 .eveready 1924 , G-bar . Its time to get another de, so for those with both ..... which one the sledge hammer slant or the new R-41 ?
Sledgehammer gets my vote, curled head plate and slant bar actually make for a very smooth shave... The R41 doesn't make for an overly pleasant daily shaver imo, I just don't like the feel. If you're in a hurry and don't have an injector, or want to touch up your sideburns, then the R41 comes in handy...
I think that sooner or later, if you buy one, you will wonder about the other and end up purchasing both anyway, just to satisfy your curiosity. I would recommend purchasing the slant before the 2011 R41. The slant is a couple of steps up from the EJ DE89 series in terms of aggressiveness while the 2011 R41 is at the complete opposite end of the aggressiveness spectrum compared to the EJ DE89. I've been using the Cobra Classic razor and even that is mild compared to the new R41.
I have both and like both. The sledge is a really good razor and if you like the shave as much as the result I would say it is the the one you want. If you want the best shave you ever had and have a little less concern for how the shave getting you to the end feels, then I'd suggest the 2011 R-41. The slant will get you a really nice feeling DFS plus consistently where the r-41 will get you a BBS consistently but you will miss out on the smooth feeling of getting there. The R-41 is just different, almost alien, where the slant is normal enough to be familiar. Hope this helps
With the slant I can get a very comfortable, close shave using nearly any blade. However with the R41, I have only found 2 blades that I find acceptable....in most cases I may as well be shaving with a cheese grater...what has been the most surprising to me...the R41 does a terrific job on my head.
I have a Sledgehammer and I enjoy the shaves it gives me. Very smooth. But I don't know that they are all that different or smoother than, say, my Futur. It's a little bit more aggressive, but in the end it feels about the same. I have not used the R41, but would love to give one a try, so I can't really speak to that. You have a bit of experience with DE shaving if I'm not mistaken so if I were you, I think I would go for the R41 and have a go with it. From what everyone says it's not for beginners, but someone who is experienced should be able to handle it. If you want something that is totally different, go for the Muhle.
I would go with the R41. IMO the shave from the slant isn't all that different from your DE89. (I didn't have a sledgehammer, but did have a slant head on a BRW Mastiff handle. Not identical, but not far off either.) Grab the R41 and enjoy the variety. It's an efficient razor capable of great shaves.
I get dfs shaves consistantly ,sometimes bbs if I push it , lots of blade buffing and j-hooks on my neck . Im looking to get bbs more often without the slight razor burn I get when I "push it ", I guess its the r41 is the one Ill ask for Xmas
