Much ado about nothing, I think. I use the same sink full of water to rinse my razor for all three passes, but I do use fresh, hot water to rinse my face..not so much to avoid bacteria, but fresh water gets my face cleaner and it feels better. When I'm all done I rinse all the whiskers and lather down the drain, using my hand to cup and spill water down the sides of the sink and then I'm done. No anti-bacterial agents, chlorine, barbacide, or anything of that nature. I don't want to compromise my immune system by not letting it keep in shape. Now with a medical background, I can see where your coming from. Medical facilities have people coming in all day with all sorts of little nasties sloughing off and being sneezed and drooled around the facility. In that situation, attention to infectious diseases is imperative! But at home, it's the same bacteria coming out in contact with the same people over and over again. My body is tough enough that I'm not going to worry about it.
As a food processor who is always sanitizing my work space I too have a thing about germs and where they live and how they get transferred. I always shave after taking a shower but one of the reasons I wet shave is to clean my face. I use Dove soap to shave wich is not the most anti-bacterial product out there but it kills more than most shave soaps and is great for cleaning my skin. I shave then rinse my brush out in the sink full of water wich gives me a sink full of soapy water to use to clean my face. Since soap is anti-bacterial by nature and the shave soaps we use have those properties due to the ingredients they are made out of I don't think that bacteria is a major concern. Plus I use the hottest water I can stand when I shave wich also helps the bacteria issue. When I am done shaving my brush and razor do get rinsed in warm water to get rid of the soap scum and this too should help.
I'm in the sink full of water crowd (or small group). I clean the sink with scrubbing bubbles at least once per weeek and have never had an issue. Before using a DE razor, I turned on the tap to rinse the Mach3 or Sensor as I couldn't get all the stubble out in a sink of water.
As I'm shaving I rinse my razor in the sink filled with hot water. When I finish I rinse the razor under running water.
Due to all the bacteria & viruses in my living & working environment I have been advised to live in a bubble. My new bubble life will prevent me from using a safety razor as it's too risky & I can't afford to burst my own bubble & be exposed to all the dangerously common buggies. Please see the Motion Picture E.T.'s home quarantine scene to see where my new home design is headed.
Honestly..I think if your sink is kept relatively clean all the time it should be ok..my BR sink however sometimes gets influx of unsavory kinds of influences and such soooo..gonna keep using the pot even at the risk of being of sissy Ishmael and mollycoddling my bacteria.. lol...
Razor and face get rinsed in said sink of water. Final rinse in running water no problems here. But I may re-think the soap scum residue on the razor. Proraso is famous for leaving white stuff behind. Thanks Randy, this may eliminate the obsessive rubbing the razor off with a towel to remove.
Hey, Pat. It virtually eliminated the scum from my daily shaves left on the razors, especially since I like to use tallow soaps. That is, if that's important to you.
I'm a sink user, I'm not a Dr but I've been an RN for 25 years. No problems my whole life. For the OP what exactly has been cultured from the average sink ? Let's see some documentation. If you clean you sink once every couple of weeks, there shouldn't be any kind of a problem, especially if you have a healthy immune system. Shave soap will destroy many spores and bacteria. Add a cold H20 rinse and some aftershave, I think all the sink users will be pretty safe. I think the OP is just blowing smoke. Nice thought but with out evidence to back your theory, This silly theory get no credibility. I personally will stay a sink user until there's real proof that there may be a problem. You are really at more risk touching a public door knob or shopping cart than using your home sink. The bacteria that has been cultured from shopping carts is insane. Truthfully unless you living in a house full of c-diff , MRSA and VRE infected individuals, you will most likely be ok.
I hate the white Proraso residue, drives me nuts. But not so nuts to quit Proraso that would be crazy
+1 I'm a sink user as well. After shaving I rinse the razor under hot water and dry it thouroghly. The sink gets a nice clean up every week. Never had any problems (yet?).
I'm a sink user as well and yes I hate the soap scum left behind. I thus have to clean the sink on a regular basis to get rid of the soap scum and thus deal with the bacteria as well.
After reading the posts on this I've come to pretty much the same conclusion because after all we are using soap to shave right?
I live with 3 other people and we all brush our teeth, etc., at the same sink. Every morning, having thoughtless teenagers, I have to wipe the various residues off the sink before I begin soaking my brush in it. So, while I know I'm not sterilizing the sink by doing so, I am removing a lot of the crud on a daily basis. When I'm done, I pull the plug and then I rinse my face in hot, then cold water. Then I rinse all of my new crud down off the walls, including wiping the entire basin free of of my shaving soap scum/whiskers, which in essence cleans the basin. Couple this daily "cleaning" with a weekly scrub of everything but the walls of the bathroom and I'm ready to take my chances. I'll continue using the sink, thanks for the heads-up.
