Heylo Everybody! Stumbled across your fantastic site over the last day or two and wanted to sign up and say Hi as I imagine I'll be getting quite a bit of good information. Been thinking and him-hawing about switching to a DE razor for years, but finally decided to take the plunge. Gonna go surf some antique stores downtown here in a few minutes and see if I can find myself an old Superspeed locally before I hit up ebay. Aside from not ever having a real satisfying experience with an electric, and hating the cost of cartridges I think there's something to be said about doing things "the old fashioned way". Especially when newer doesn't mean better. Anyway, thanks to everybody who contributes to this great place and, I'll see ya around!
Welcome to the Den. We know you'll fit right in. So grab yourself a comfy chair, and give our threads a spin! Burma Shave
Well.. day 1. 4 antique stores was a bust. 1 shop did have one of these... -- http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/New Improved/1920s Old Type DeLuxe Canada.JPG But was in VERY rough condition. Chip knocked out of the bottom of the handle looked like, tooth broken off. Don't even know what happened to it! There are two more shops in the next town over to check out after work tomorrow so we'll see how that goes. If not, I have my eye on a couple good superspeed auctions on ebay. Might even try and hit you folks up for advice on how not to get a bunk one there.
A warm welcome to the Den also from me, Albadia! Don't give up on the antique stores quite yet, you might find a real nice razor when you least expect it! But you were right in not going for the beaten up Gillette New, you can get much better than what you've described at still excellent prices. Btw, I nitice you've stumbled already accross one of the best reference sites for Gillette razors, mr-razor's page. Well done!
Welcome, and prepare to have fun and the best shave(s) of your life. Check out our items for sale in the Classified forum under the mall.
Didn't even think about the classified page. Saw it but guess it just didn't register. Found Mr-Razor from a link here I think? Or on Badger and Blade. I've got a bit of OCD about researching the living hell out of something before I take any jumps and so I've done a fair bit of reading and looking so I knew what I wanted. Went in with the page open on my phone so I had a reference =D But definately haven't given up on the Antique stores! 2 more tomorrow after work, and a lady from the first one I went to and called me saying she had some "silver razor that twists open" so Ill cruise by and see what she's got as well. Aside from obvious stuff like I saw in the first one (heavy rust, very chipped plating, broken pieces) are there any red flags I should be looking out for?
...to The Shave Den family! Be sure to stop by The Shave Den "Master Sticky" thread to familiarize yourself with the rules and different areas of The Shave Den!
Welcome! And good on you for doing research, nothing sucks as much as buying the wrong product for the wrong price.
Welcome to TSD Curious to hear if you had any luck. I plan to check some antique stores also, it will be great to learn from your experience.
Good start and keep searching antiques stores, you never know what you will find. This is also a great forum for information and camaraderie!
