Hi Guys Well, I finally heard from Matt at the Razor Emporium... been on honeymoon. He was sorry about the imperfections but didn't think I'd be happy waiting any longer. He also said the razor now has a very thick plating of Rhodium instead of the usual plating thickness. Fine. If I sell the razor maybe I use that as a selling point, maybe I don't. Anyhow I started to get really pissed the more I thought about this, so down to the workshop with razor in hand. Dug out the dremel, a rag buffing wheel and Mothers' Billet metal polish. Did 2 separate polishings and man did that razor pop after that. I got the scratch/marks out of the finish and I'm very pleased with the razor and my efforts. I just have to wonder why they didn't do this themselves. It was easy and I would've been really happy and told them so. Now I'm going to send Matt the pics and point out how easy it was to fix the problem. The pics show both sides of the silos on top. What an experience.....
Ya good work.. much better. I like the way you said 'so down to the workshop with razor in hand'.. down to the bat cave Robin..lol..
Very cool!! If I ever think of sending a razor to them for replating, I'll make sure they send it to you for the final finishing before it goes home... Great Job...!! I'm so glad you don't have to send it out again to someone else.....Your right RE should have sent it to you like that...
Great job, Huck. I'm sure it's a relief to finally put this thing behind you. Enjoy the shaves with it!
Beautiful, the way it should have been! I wonder if those of us with metal working experience could get RE to offer plating for $30, and let us do the finish...? Mmmmm, prob'ly not, right?
Now that's the way it should have looked in the first place!!!!!! Four months ago. Nice work, and good for you telling the Revamp Raiders Off!
That looks very nice! Sorry to read about all the trouble you had to go through to get it done right, though. At least your experience can serve as a lesson to others. For that you have my sincere thanks. If I ever get a razor replated, it will be at a local electroplating shop where I can deal with the people directly.
Great job, You should replate your self, with that kinda work ethic and work standards. Im sure you would do well.
Man, i'm thinking about sending mine off for replating, now I know who NOT to go through.... Thanks for the heads up!
I won this a few hours ago: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-HR-...551?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35bb9901cf 1930's Gillette Aristocrat Barberpole in a Segal case!! I had been watching that auction for DAYS. A little scrubbing w/ soap and a toothbrush and I'm sure it'll look great. Anyway, it was $44 and overpriced shipping.
Jody should be along soon to discuss it. That is one of his favorites! They are really good razors when you get them all cleaned up!
Not to hijack the OP's thread but indeed, to me anyway, Gillette's best razor made. Some say the British versions are the best but I respectfully disagree. Maybe in looks and plating but not in shave. This was Gillette's very first one-piece razor, this USA open-comb Gillette Aristocrat and they did it right. Functional art. Clean it up and use it well - or clean it up, have it replated as I did except not in original gold but in rhodium, and use it well. Either way, use it well.
