New Blades - how often?

No matter the blade, I'm usually done after the third shave. I don't have a challenging beard but I do not get the idea of being so cheap that you try to get one more shave than the blade was capable of. I like feeling I've got a reasonably fresh, sharp blade in my razor. While I've got a few razors, I use them one at a time to make keeping track of the number of shades simple. My most expensive blades now are the Feathers at 27 cents each. That's 9 cents a shave for three shaves vs. about 7 cents for four shaves. I mean, c'mon.

Everyone is welcome to their own thought processes and such. Just cause it isn't for you, doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

Your face will tell you when you will need to change. Personally for myself I change blades every 3 days.

Is there any way to figure out what a "better" blade is other than just reading reviews?

Unfortunately no. One man's treasure is another man's garbage. The only way to find the better blades for you is to buy them and try them until you find what works for your skin and razor the best.

Bummer. Oh well. I'll start out with the ones that come with the Lordtech Premium and then start reading reviews when I need to get more. Thanks for the info!

Not a bummer! Exploring the many blades available is another aspect of shaving that makes it interesting.

  9. I think swarden's routine is pretty great. I may steal it someday, after I have learned SE, as long as he hasn't put some sort of a patent on it...

I do the 3 shaves and toss it thing. My tough beard will it up a blade and I really don't like tugging.

I had been just shaving until the blade told me that it was done. Now, though, I am going through some sampler packs that I have and I'm trying to stick to 3 shaves per blade. I'm doing a similar, but less detailed comparison to Swarden- I use a new blade with the same cream and shaving approach- i.e. 3-pass shave, very limited touch-ups on the first shave and see how it stacks up to other blades I've tried. The 2nd day I typically do a 2-pass shave with or without touchups, and then the 3rd day I do either a 2-pass or 3-pass shave depending on my mood that day. My results so far are that Voskhods seem to give the most comfortable shave in terms of closeness and comfort- the blade just felt like it absolutely did NOT want to irritate my skin in any way; Feathers are a close 2nd- I'd say about equally close shave (today was my 2nd Feather shave) and didn't irritate but felt like it definitely could have; Personna "blues" are my 3rd blade right now, but I'm anxious to give them another try at the conclusion of my testing- they gave me the closest shave yet I think, but irritated my neck a good bit...

And CSG, using blades until they tell me it is time to stop has absolutely nothing to do with cost as I couldn't tell you what I paid per blade for any of the blades I'm currently using or have bought since I started wet shaving. For me, it it just an intense disliking for being wasteful. I hate to throw things out if they might, could have some purpose for something at some point in the future. It isn't that I'm worried about the extra couple of cents per shave, I just don't see any need to throw out a blade after 3 shaves if it is perfectly good for 5. As soon as I feel it start to tug, I toss it and get a new one whether it is after the 5th shave or halfway through the first.

I use a fresh blade every day, but that's unusual. 3 days is common, but weekly changes are common, too. It mostly has to do with how tough your beard is.

In my youth I often went a month on one blade, which amazes me now. Just 3 years ago I got a week out of a blade. Today, I have several blades in bulk supply, and 3 days and out makes the most sense. We change.

    alpla444 That's sweet!

3-6 depends on the blade, but more often than not 3 shaves then out. As every one else has said.

I would formerly go 3 or 4 and out. Now that I'm using the Personna Medical Prep blades I go a week - that's 6 or 7 three lather shaves.

  18. these blades are so cheap! even the prep blades at $40 +100ct which is most expensive blade ive seen. all de blades should be 1 and out, why short change urself at that price . rice is more expensive than de blades!!

Some blades improve after the first use. Others give several shaves as good as the first, so why throw it out?

  20. cause they dull after the 1st shave, dude. i never used a blade that improved with use, ever. thats like saying here take this battery after i used it......
