My first SE - did I do good?

Was browsing through eBay last night and stumbled across this with only an hour or so left on it. Went through the rest of the auctions (worldwide) and found nothing similar. As I am a mechanical gadget freak at heart, I just had to get it.

Vintage Schick Repeating Razor - Closed Comb - Type C - safety razor, gold plate

In the end it cost me $46.00 USD (approx £28.50 GBP) plus shipping - did I do well or has RAD got the better of me and have I spent more than it is probably worth.

More importantly - What blades does it take? And any idea what it shaves like?

(I can't believer James Bond never had one of these as a travel razor - seems right up his alley to me).

Some photo's (these are the ones the seller took)

You did excellent. Even though that is a SE it really is a Schick Repeating Razor which was the forerunner to the Schick injector. That one is in excellent shape.

However, without an internal magazine to load the blades, you will be forced to manually load blades.

Magazines are hard to come by since they stopped making them sometime after WWII because the Injectors were more popular.

You can manually load with a set of needle nosed pliers and a standard injector blade released from a dispenser.

However, you don't have a good frame of reference to do that yet.

What I would suggest you do it hold on to this because it truly is a collectors item. Don't get rid of it. I would wait to try to use it until you get some injector experience under your belt.

What I would do is look through this thread:

    http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/injector-se-party.23113/

Look for a true injector and buy one and some blades. Use it for a while until you see how the injector works and then you easily see how to load this with or without the magazine.

You got a great deal! I think there is at least one person on TSD who uses this razor and has figured out a system to load blades.

Dean has one of these and is using a magazine. I have manually loaded my A, B and C types in the past and discussed how I loaded mine. Huck has several variants of this razor as well.

The best thing to do is to use a regular injector first to get use to it before trying this razor to allow CmdrBond to get a chance to get use to how that mechanism works before moving to use a more rare piece that may need to be loaded in a method that is not normal if he cannot find a magazine. I guess I am looking at this one as a show piece because it is in such good shape so maybe I am being more cautious because of that.

So you're the guy who outbid me. Congrats on a great razor. I have 4 of them and they're among my favourite razors. They use injector blades Personna or Schick if you can find them. There should also be a small tray inside the handle when you've got the door open as in the 2nd last photo you posted.. It should look like the one in my pic. The next pic shows the trays partially loaded with blades in. You buy the injector and take the blades out. Then place them carefully in the tray which you reload into the razor. The slide is then pulled out (your last pic) and pushed back in whereupon a new blade is pushed into the head which has to be in the folded position (your last pic). If you don't have the tray you can, again carefully, load a blade directly into the head. A lot of guys just put one blade at a time in the head which saves fiddling around with the blades and trays etc. Originally you bought refills for the razor which had the blades and tray already together, you just opened it up took out the old tray and replaced it with the new set. It's a cool razor and I think they're great shavers as well. P1010083.jpg IMG_0046.JPG

Hehe - cheers for the info.

I noticed there appear to be 2 more types C's on there ATM, possibly both C3's! There BIN's and at twice what I paid for that one :D so I don't think I'll be dropping any cash on them any time soon. (one is marked up as a Type B and the other doesn't say).

I do think I have found some magazines though - I know I am not allowed to post live auction links, so is there anyone I could pm the auction links to check if they are the right things?

I'm glad i seem to have got a reasonably priced bit of kit too - I was worried I paid over the odds - so easy to do with eBay.

Talking of over the odds - there is a boxed sterling silver type A or B (not sure which) up there, BIN $725 !!!

The Schick Repeater is too cool for school...Col. Schick was so far ahead of his time with that one...No ones caught up yet....
Yeah GDC or Huck or Some of the other cats who have them can identify the mags for you....That would be great if you could cop some....

Were you able to obtain a magazine?

I have emailed the seller to see if it has the "tray", I am expecting the answer to come back as no as it is not shown in any of the pics.

I do have my eye on some magazines, and huck1680 has been very helpful.

I have invited you into our conversation.

    [edit]

Just received an update from the seller

Looks like I will have to get one of the magazines I have stumbled across. Will have to wait a few days though, so I hope they are still available.

When you get a magazine, do yourself a favor and take some pictures of how the blades face so that when you replace them, you will have a frame of reference to go by.

    Will do.

Based on the very helpful advice from huck1680 and GDCarrington, I have just procured 1 set of these from 1937.

That is one of the razors I hope to acquire. I love the injectors. They are great shavers.
It's funny that I gripe about getting only 3 or 4 shaves from an SE or Injector blade, compared to 6 to 8 from a DE.
It's funny, because I only got 3 or 4 shaves from a Sensor, Mach 3 or FUsion blade and they cost a LOT more than SE or Injector blades.
    What's wrong with me?:(

Most of those that I have come across still have a magazine in them with a few blades left in it. I got one once and the magazine was loaded incorrectly. Took some fiddling, but I figured it out. As long as the magazine is in there it's not hard to "reload" it with injector blades. If it turns out yours has a magazine in it, I would keep the one you bought for display purposes, and reload the one in it with coated stainless steel blades which will probably shave better and be easier to replace. I see NOS Personna 74 blades for these all the time. Those would be my choice, but in a pinch you can find brand new Schick Injectors in drug stores or on Amazon.

Congrats on scoring a really neat razor!

Yes I use a Type-A with the magazine it works perfect. If you want a magazine you may be best buying another razor in beat up condition rather than buying a magazine as most magazines are with the original tube and are a similar price to what you paid, but as Gary has proved you do it with pliers and some care:).
Just as I was about to post this I noticed you got one LOL

I just popped a new blade out of the dispenser and placed it at the top of the magazine (making sure it was the correct way round!!!) to me it was a JOY loading the blades. Nice purchase

OK, the razor did NOT come with the magazine, but I HAVE purchased one separately - OK, I may have paid a little bit over the odds, but at least I have a complete unit now.

The pack of blades had been opened, I have kept everything as is, but taken the magazine out. I have tested the razor with the blades and the loading mech works flawlessly. I have "stuck" the blades back together and put them back in the original tube and put that in a safe place. Just need to get some new blades now. @Mattface, thanks for the tips.

I just cannot believe that something this cool is not still made.

I saw one of those at my parents house and couldn't figure out you're to open it lol. I think it needs some TLC. I may have to go back and pick it up.

I've seen them. They seem to go for a pretty good price. Never used one. I'm not much of an injector user anyway.
