Good blades and prep will get me a DFS on the neck in 3 passes. Getting BBS there requires a reasonably new blade, and lots of patience.
Thanks Battle Monkey! had not picked up that skill yet! sitting here at my desk I think it might just work! will let you know tomorrow!!
I get it with every shave. I don't mean too, its just that if I don't shave that way you can still see hair. I for the most part use a Feather blade and do a pass every way you can think of because my hair goes in every direction. I've learned over time, I need to use short and no pressure strokes to not have irritation. I still get a sting from the alum, but no bumps or redness when I'm done. Practice makes perfect!
Is it possible? Yes. Do I aim for it with every shave? No. There are so many variables, from prep, to razor, to the blade that you are using, and the amount of time that you have to shave. One razor/blade combo that I can always get a true BBS all over is a Tech loaded with a Feather. The problem, it takes a lot of time and work. For my coarse heavy beard it takes three passes on my face, four passes on my neck, plus toms of j-hooks, buffing, and other techniques that I am sure are unique to me. Most of my Open Combs give me close to BBS with virtually any blade in two passes. If Iwant a true BBS, again, lots of work, so typically I will do some light buffing as my third pass and I'm done. More than good enough, and much better than any cartridge that I used in the past. My main goal is to look clean and presentable, not Inspecting General clean shaven. I think that once we started classic shaving, at least for me, I was paying far greater attention to my shave than I ever had in the past. We become our worse enemies because we try to push ourselves to fast, to soon. Enjoy the experience, focus on your technique and one day BBS will find you.
I get BBS pretty regularly on my neck, but it takes a little J-hooking and blade buffing. I hate to say it, but when I was on the road I would occasionally use the Schick Hydro 3 and it worked very well ATG on my neck and gave me BBS shaves. I'm not a cart fan, but the Schick Hydro really gives a nice irritation free shave AND I have gotten up to 30 shaves from a single cart. The last shaves weren't quite BBS and I have very coarse whiskers.
Sometimes but never on purpose. I think good prep a sharp blade and patience are the main ingredients. Some soaps help I find that Arko protectss my skin better than some other soaps i have tried. Very trick place the neck and better to be less than perfect ... 'cause irritation and cuts are not worth it.
Funny you should mention XTG stkokes as I tried that this moring with my Valet Auto Strop Razor and despite the razor being very aggressive I got an excellent BBS shave and no irritation. It could be that my technique is getting better or more likely I use much less pressure with a SE and take things slower, I also re-lather frequently. Makes me wonder what is best method sometimes; a gentle razor like a Tech that you can do repeated passes with or a more aggressive razor like the Valet that allows fewer more effective passes.
The best shave I ever had on my neck was when I used a Gillette Guard. With my normal setup, I usually get a few stubborn bits of stubble.
It is amazing how many of us have the very same issues. I as well have a very hard time getting BBS on my neck. I am happy with a DFS on the neck tho. If I try for more than that I spend the rest of the day tender and sore. Not worth it! I am sure as time goes on and I get better it as well will get better. For now however I am happy with what I am able to get without any pain!!
Agreed. I struggle with the neck I can avoid irritation only if I stick to WTG passes. I get BBS with a bunch of razor burns if I go ATG even as a third pass. If I recall my cart days correctly, I gave me a BBS with no irritation everywhere, but I did have ingrown hairs more frequently and I really wasn't paying much attention to my shave. So maybe it wasn't even BBS after all!
