True. I can't deny it. But, I just hate carrying stuff in my pockets. I even take off my watch as soon as I get home.
In direct proof of what you said, today I forgot my knife at home for the first time in a couple of weeks. Predictably-enough, the following exchange took place here in the lab. Darren: Do you have a knife or something? Me: Doh!
Just showed up. It is a Magnum Prince. Magnum is a division of Boker, which many of you know made some great straights back in the day. It is true 37 layer Damascus, with burlwood scales. I am very happy with it.
The liners and the bolsters are stainless, the blade is Damascus. Had to ask where it was made didn't you? Actually China, but there is no way I could afford one of the Solingen Boker Damascus knives. I don't know if all of their Magnum line is made in China or not, but I am impressed with the quality. Does not feel like one would expect to come out of China.
The Danish law only allow pocket knifes with blades smaller than 7 cm, in public. Pocket knifes with blades that can be locked in the open position, and pocket knifes that can be opened with one hand, are also illegal. For work/hunting purposes, bigger knifes are allowed. I don't carry a knife. I used to when i was sailing for a living. I had one of these: I have a Sámi knife, but it's to big for me to bring anywhere...
I usually carry a Benchmade Griptilian (partial-serration), but my Microtech Scarab makes the occasional appearance too. The Grip is great because I can beat it up without feeling guilty. It's a great "hard-use" everyday knife. BTW, I recently bought two Fireman's Knives from Ed Martin. I highly recommend them if you're looking for a short, sturdy fixed-blade. I've got a Randall Fireman's Knife too, but somehow it's the Martin that finds it's way into the field with me most times.
Wow! Somebody's been doing some digging!! Cool thread, though. I've carried a pocket knife since my grandfather gave me my first back when I was nine. I even have a small one that I carry when I have to wear a suit, so, yes, I even preach with a knife in my pocket! As I type I have a Camillus stockman my sister-in-law gave me 20+ years ago.
I keep a left-handed Swiss Army knife in my handbag & a Leatherman Wave tool in my briefcase. I have had to use that, many times, to repair various things in my classroom.
I agree with Swarden: cool thread. Cool dig Rene. I keep an old Victorinox folding blade & a Leatherman 'Wave' on the work belt.
To bad. SBs and Lever locks are a blast. Italian, Czech, USA, German and German. The little one at the bottom is the one I usually carry.
I either carry an Opinel 6" blade or a cheapo Gerber that I can beat the hell out of and still keep sharp. I have numerous knives though ranging from old pocket knives that belonged to my grandpa to K-bar's and Seal Pups. I carry a Gerber multi tool when I'm in uniform and when I'm in full battle rattle, I hang my Seal Pup off my IBA (body armor).
First thing that I grab in morning before my belt is a pocket knife. A knife among other items has been such a part of my life for so long I can't go anywhere without one. I actually feel uncomfortable without certain items. A ZT 035CB is my primary pocket carry. I use two have two at all times one being an auto for fast one handed deploymen plus and an Esse 4 fixed blade with a wicked edge or A Kbar D2 impact with my tac gear. I knew guys that carried more then that.
I've carried some type of pocket knife virtually everyday since I was 12, I'm 57 now. My first really decent knife was a German "Black Cat" lock back. Still have that knife today although its in REALLY rough shape now. However I liked it so much about 2-3 years ago I found that they were still being made and so bought another one. My current EDC is a Spyderco Chaparrel it's marketed as a Gentlemans folder, but with Carbon Fibre scales, 2.8" CPM S30V blade,left/right reversable pocket clip and spyder hole for easy one-handed ambidextrous opening, this little midlock knife is quit a useful and rugged....
I carry a small cheap pocketknife, cheap because I often forget about it and have it confiscated at the airport. I use it for all kinds of tasks. I don't understand my wife though, she doesn't comment when I use it to clean my toenails, but she says it's gross when I use it to pick my teeth. I don't see how picking my teeth with a pocketknife is any less couth than cleaning my toenails. Maybe I should write to Miss Manners and ask her opinion.
I carry a Gerber Clutch or Leatherman Wave at work on my keychain. Small enough that their unobtrusive and great for pulling staples, cutting open packages and whatnot. When I go out, I usually have a one-hand Schrade lockback clipped in my front pants pocket. There's a big old Victorinox around here somewhere but can't recall where. Also have a Stanley wood handle 3" carbon blade pocketknife. Got it at Big Lots some years ago for $3, I think. A surprisingly nice knife, wish I'd picked up a few more.
