I have a quesstion to all of you that own multiple razors, lets just say for a number, 4 or more. Do you rotate all your razors each day or do you find you have a couple of "go to" razors that you use regularly while the rest sit in your collection lonely and longing to be used?
I can't believe no one has answered this already... You would be hard pressed to find a member in this forum that has been here longer than three months that owns less than 4 razors. I own 5 DE razors, 3 SE razors, 5 Shavettes, 2 Straight razors, and three cartridge razors. I shave with whichever one takes my fancy at the moment. Sometimes I'll use the same razor for a week or two straight, other times I'll use 3 different razors in the same shave, switching them out for each pass. I think you'll find my experience a bit "out there," most people are a little more attached to certain razors. That being said, I do have two razors that I reach for most of the time.
I usually switch my razors out maybe every month or so. Btw, I have 5 DE's, one injector, and 1 cart.
Yup, I've got one I reach for almost all the time - but I still own about 50 DE's and SE's, and have no plans to get rid of any of them. And, like Ryan, I shave with whichever one takes my fancy that day - it's just that lately that has almost always been one favorite that has become so intuitive in use that I don't really have to think about shaving as I shave - leaving me free to contemplate the mysteries of the universe, or maybe just my navel if my coffee hasn't kicked in yet... It's a very nice navel...
I have 7 straights. I use a pretty set rotation, but they only get used on Saturdays when I can really take my leisure. I have 30 some-odd DEs and SEs total. No set rotation, but I doubt I use the same razor within two weeks time.
I have a bunch of DE, SE and injectors also. In the begining I would switch razors alot trying to find "THE ONE" Now that I think I've found it, I mainly shave with just it unless I'm trying something new. I don't know if this counts but I've kind of been following the Bruce Everiss multiple razor shave. So I actually use two razors an SE followed by a DE for my morning shave. I don't know that my shave is closer or better, but using two different types of razors back to back for the same shave is alot of fun. [Edit] While I still use two razors for my morning shave, the EverReady 1924 SE has been replaced with a Cadet OC, mainly because my local sourse for Gem SE blades(Walgreens) has dried up and its just to much of a PIA to find another source...
I usually change them out every month... I choose straight for use at the weekends, when I have more time to enjoy the experience, and a D/E (if I find time) for a mid week shave...
I've got six razors. I rotate them in a more or less fixed series: mon: Gillette flare tip Rocket tue: Gem OCMM wed: Ugly Duckling thu: Valte autostrop fri: Gillette Old Style OC sat &sun: Rolls Razor This way they all get a turn and I can enjoy them all. But of course I can change (for instance with the theme weeks).
I try to rotate mine, but then I get stuck on one for a while, and the others get dusty. Then I revisit them and the cycle of lonely razors continues.
I peronally try and stick to one particular razor for a full week before rotating them. Sometimes, but rather rarely, do I switch razors mid-week.
I'm all over the map on my usage and now I started collecting straights so who knows where that will lead! Like Neolithium said, I usually rotate but then get stuck on one for awhile.
I'm also all over the map. I normally have a razor of the week that I'm hooked on, but I do change for a shave or two during the week. I also keep a Gillette Knack loaded all the time as my neck and upper lip sometimes cry uncle and need a softer touch, so I'll make my wtg & xtg passes with one razor and then the agt with the Knack just for comfort. I will say I have been getting better with my technique and have been using the Knack less and less.
Pretty much straights only. I usually put a razor into rotation for a week at a time, then rotate in another one on Sunday morning. I can't really give you a reason for doing it this way, other than the fact I usually develop a nice feel for the razor and most of the time, I hate to rotate them out. I have quite a few straights.
I have a general rotation, but I usually find myself breaking or varying it based on my preference for that day.
Well, as I fall further and further into this, I am rotating my straights with a couple of safety razors. I really enjoy using the straights, the time it takes to shave is very relaxing. Now that I have a couple of Gillettes I am enjoying trying out the different blades available. I can see myself using the safety razors in the mornings before work just because they take less time. The straights will probably be saved for weekends where I can fully enjoy the time.
I have more than 10 straight razors, and I use them all, and I will probably add more to my collection if the right one should come my way. Jamie
I have five DE's and one SE. I just pick what I feel like using. I want to get back into straights but I have none right now. I have been itching to get a complete set up, possibly a brand new razor, strop brush and hone so that I can have a good solid starting point. My fear is that I will go ballistic and buy a thousand dollars worth of straights in a month.
At the moment I have three razors in my rotation. One EJ 89 with a yellow Gillette, one Merkur HD with a Polsilver SI and one Merkur Progress with a Feather. So I do not choose the razor, I choose the blade. But I am rather new at this, and have yet to find balance in the Force
You have different schools of traditional shavers. The first being the functional shaver who may own 2-5 razors, and uses them in rotation as they see fit. The second school which I more fall into is a functional collector. I own over 100 razors and will use every one that is not NOS or extremely rare, but gravitates towards a certain style or theme. For example right now I'm focusing on GEM SE's for a week or 2, then ill use all 20 something USA and UK aristocrats then mix it up and randomize but regardless of this the main goal is the collection of not the rotation of the razors. Neither school is " better" just two different sides of the same coin.
