Shave of the Day (SOTD) Menthol/Merkur Monday November 12, 2012 Prep: Brush soaking in ice water, face washed with Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish Cleanser, luke warm shower Razor: Merkur 41R 1904 Open Comb mounted to Alabastron Tortoise Handle Blade: Personna Med Prep (3) Brush: Semogue 820 Boar Soap: Proraso Menthol and Eucalyptus (New Formula) Cream: Lea Mentholated AS: Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue Post: Cold Water Rinse, Double Splash of Aftershave The Personna Med prep blade still provided an excellent shave on it's third day. Usually on "Merkur Monday" I like using my Progress, but my skin was still sensitive from the reaction to the soap from yesterday's shave. The Merkur 41R always provides an efficient and mild shave, especially when paired to a nice sharp blade. Built an Überlather of Proraso and Lea Mentholated today, the combination of the two really produces a good lather. I need to try adding some M-Bomb or menthol crystals to try to get the freeze level that I am looking for, as nothing is as cold as I would like. Aqua Velva is always a nice way to end an shave, as I just love it.
Red Imp, 5/8 (Case) Irisch Moos 30mm Homemade Silver Tip Osage Rub Very nice shave this morning. I've never been a big fan of the scent of Irisch Moos but it's a good soap. The temperature is in the single digits this morning and feels like winter, a good morning for a little Osage Rub. Have a good Veterans Day Holiday today.. image hosting sites
Floid PSG Lea Menthol SC Frank Shaving Synthetic Brush 1960s Vintage Gillette Tech (British) Personna Blade (3) Osage Rub Vifrex ASG Floid "The Genuine" ASL I was packing for my Tokyo overnight trip and I realized that it was Sunday. I decided to make some changes to the shaving products so I could have my Monday morning menthol shave in Tokyo. I have to say, the Lea shaving cream is very, very nice! In the USA you can get a tube of it for only $6.00 with free shipping from shaveabuck.com. That's a pretty good deal. I am finding that I am really starting to like the scent. The vintage Tech did a nice job of delivering a good shave with the none-to-fresh Personna blade. Three shaves is all I can get from one of these blades. Hope everyone has a great week! Cheers, Lyndon Movember 2012 Participant (www.movember.com)
Monday morning, November 12, 2012 Schick E2 Injector razor w/ Schick blade (2) Semogue 1305 boar bristle brush, MWF shaving soap w/ warm water lather, finish with cold water rinse for a DFS!
On this beautiful Veterans Day, I salute all the Vets. Now on with the shave. 2 cups of strong hot coffee, 4 smokes and an hour of national news Began with a sink full of warm water (hot water heater is set to kick on at 3 pm.) VDH soap, whipped up with Silvertip badger brush And, now the different part. I used a 2 bladed disposable razor. Yep, first time in 3 years since I had used a disposable. I was expecting a terrible shave, but got a nice comfortable shave instead. Granted, it took 3 passes and a touch up to get the same kind of shave as my usual 2 pass shave with my Gillette Aristocrat and a Wilkinson blade. All in all, a surprisingly DFS. Will find out if the shave lasts as long as my DE razor. Burts Bees aftershave balm followed up with Jovan "Sex Appeal" cologne Hope everyone has a great day!
Arley, I am going to try to get you and Lyndon some Diana Sport Menthol balsam. I am a member of the German gut rasiert forum so I will ask some of the guys I know if they can find it, and if they do I'll make sure you two guys own the stuff. But: I warn you - this stuff has been known to cause discomfort in skin which cannot handle intense menthol. It is powerful, and I mean POWERFUL.
SOTD Monday 11-12-2012 Sabi CC Head/Merkur 1904 Handle Personna Stainless/ Voskhod Teflon Blade Irisch Moos SC Semogue 820 Boar Dickinson's Witch Hazel Nivea Replenishing ASB Adidas Dynamic Pulse ASL First pass with the Sabi/1904 combo was with the Personna Stainless blade which after a couple of strokes didn't seem to be up to par. I re-loaded with the Voskhod and bingo, nice and smooth. The Sabi CC head shaves about the same as the Merkur CC Head (the Sabi is a clone of it) so the shave was very acceptable. Although the finish quality of the Sabi was not on the same level as the Merkur head it wasn't bad with the exception of some tiny micro bubbles in the chrome finish at the ends of the cap plate. It's a keeper and paired with the crappy Merkur 1904 handle that I got (I'm still ticked about that...as you might tell!) instead of the nicely polished handle shown in the advertising picture when I ordered it, the combo looks pretty good.

Fatboy SuperMax Platinum Rooney 3/3 Finest Ogallala Bay Rum Limes & Peppercorn soap and A/S Thanks to all that served and to those who lost a loved one who served. My heart goes out to you!
Don't know???? It was supposed to be a Merkur 41R. What's the story on the Yuma handle. (I guess I'm not up to speed on that one.) LOL Just did some research on the web about the Yuma razor (more specifically the handle) and I must say the finish on the Merkur 1904 handle that I got is about the same grade as the Yuma handle. It is NOT a Yuma handle though because mine is solid not hollow. I noticed that Merkur re-tooled their dies for the 1904 handle (obviously they had deteriorated so badly they HAD to re-do them..Probably, my handle was the last handle made on the old dies! LOL) At any rate, it appears that the new production of Merkur 1904 razors (both 41R & 42R) have some decent handles on them. At least the Merkur OC head that I got on mine was pretty good quality and it is now adorning a T2 Handle.
Menthol Monday! AOS Ocean Kemp SC Vie Long Brush Weber DLC with long handle Iridium Blade TSD 2x Iced Cedar/Lemon Splash TSD Iced Cedarwood AS Milk tunes-Be Good Tanya's (saw em at the Old Town School of Folk Music last night-great show!, but missed Bears game, and they lost)
Thanks Jeff! That's very kind of you. I am quite excited to give it a try. If it ends up a bit strong for me I could always try to mix it 50/50 with another balm like Proraso or Nivea. So far I have been okay with menthol and I can usually put lots and lots of Osage on without any irritation. I did end up registering on an Austrian web site and I tried to buy a bottle but when I got to the checkout process, I found that the company only ships inside of Austria. I haven't given up though, and if I do find some, I will let you know. Thanks again... Lyndon
Sorry to hear about the poor looking handle. I have the same one and mine is pretty good. I originally bought both the 1904 open comb and closed comb razors as a set. But the color was distinctly different on both razors so they didn't really make a nice matching pair. I have the Yuma razor and it is basically a $2.00 razor made of zinc with no real plating. It's a bit of a scruffy dog but man does it ever get the job done! I love that thing!!
Thanks Lyndon, I don't mean to cry in my beer about the handle, just venting a bit. LOL The newer Merkurs are fine and the handles look really nice. I still like the look of the design. I just boned up on the Yuma and it sounds like it works pretty well; just a basic razor but, like you said; for $2 bucks what's there to loose? LOL
