Way to go Ryan, I think you did it the right way!! Sounds like you were very sensible with the straight and avoided having a negative experience. I think that is very important. I have about three straights and I would like to use them more but I need some help to get a proper edge on them. Luckily, one of the guys at work has been shaving with straits for about 19 years! He is an absolute expert with straights and honing. So, once again, well done!
    Cheers, Lyndon

Man, what an enjoyable shave!! I just love the Proraso products, they are truly "top shelf". This was the first shave with my new 1947 Super Speed. I was surprised to find that it was a bit aggressive. It seems to be more aggressive than the Red Tip Super Speed but I will have to use them both a lot more to be sure. The one thing that really surprised me was... this razor really loves to sing. It provided a very loud audible feedback. (The pitch was a bit low so I am guessing this guy is a baritone.) :) What a great razor! No question this guy can deliver the BBS goods. And, it was really fun to use. If you are interested in Super Speeds, you should have a look at this great article: AsylumGuido's Guide to Super Speed Identification

I used a double splash of Osage Rub and applied it to my face, ears, neck and shoulders. It feels great! Then before the Osage could dry I applied my after shave balm. Two shots of Proraso ASL was the icing on cake. Perfect.

    Cheers, everyone!

First time with the SI blade, and after three passes I rate it as an OK blade. Kind of like the Astra SP, perhaps a little smoother.
But the third pass felt like I was shaving with an unloaded razor, and I had the same experience with the Astra blade.
Perhaps the razor is too mild for the third pass? I will have to try the blade in the Merkur HD

Another smooth-as-silk and VERY comfortable shave this morning. The only thing which prevents me from giving the Rose of Bulgaria cream the :love055: symbol is the scent. I find it to be not only not rosy, it's also very artificial. Everything else about it is great - rich, creamy, stable lather, and perfect skincare. The Thayer's witch hazel works very well as an aftershave. ;) :D

Fine shave this morning. Looking at a couple of straights on the 'bay, it's a disease. One looks like a real sleeper, the gamble, lol. Have a good one.

Not much to say about today's shave except what I keep saying about the Progress....nothing shaves my face better. Hands down, it has become my favorite DE razor, followed closely by the Matador Open Comb and then the Cadet TTO.

Pick this wedge up at a little antique store in a small town in Oregon. It looked pretty good so I couldn't resist. When I got home I quickly cleaned the rust spots and polished it up some and put it through the Nortons. The edge was very clean but about as keen as a table knife so I started with the 4000K and then to the 8000K then finished on the C12K stropped it out through the progressive strops and went for a test shave. Although I rushed through the honing process, the shave was pretty nice. It clearly needed to revisit the hones again and get a little more tuning but the shave was pretty close and the edge seemed smooth. At any rate, the next honing sequence tuned the bevel to perfection and this razor is a prized addition to my collection!
I think the scales are vintage ivory but I'm not sure (I'm not wealthy enough to have Ivory handles on things!) however, they could be bone.

Did some research and picked this info up in one of Manah's old posts: James Barlow & Sons was located in Rockingham Street in 1856, and then Garden Street in 1859. The corporate mark was "ECHO", which had been used by Peter Spurr. James Barlow died on 15 June 1869, aged 78. He was succeeded by his sons, James and John. By the 1870's, the company located Norfolk Street. James died on 20 June 1900. His brother continued the business. Between about 1904-1918, the company address was Era Works, Wheeldon Street, but it had ceased business by 1919.
