I want to add a horse hair brush to my collection. Which of the Vie-Long brushes would you recommend?
I've been eye balling the Vie-Longs for a while now. I like the natural brown hair, the white hair looks to much like a boar brush. My personal favorite, just from looking is this one: 13061S Overall Length - 95mm. Handle Length - 45mm. Loft - 50mm. Knot - 24mm.
Where did you find this one at? The 13061 model I found was dyed. I agree, I like the natural color myself.
I have the 04312 Professional metal/wood handle it has a longish (61mm) loft and a 12601 tan acrylic handle 55mm loft. I had a 12705 red acrylic handle that I gave to a friend as I found the handle VERY big(fat) and uncomfortable to use. I only used the brushes a short while, but not bebause they weren't any good( they are nice well made brushes), but rather because I found "THE BRUSH" for me! A #6 Turkish Horse from bestshave. I've used this brush daily for well over a year and I still enjoy it and have no interest or need to use a different one....
I'm not sure of which Vie Long brushes I have: it's a natural horsehair brush in a butterscotch handle. I received it as a gift. I thought it was a 13061 but I'm not sure now. It's a good brush. I like its backbone and its water/ lather retention. I haven't had any issues with it, although the smell was overwhelming the first time I used it. Thankfully it faded quickly. If you want a Vie Long then I recommend the natural horsehair version. I really like mine.
The 13070 is a nice brush that is readily available. http://shavetools.com/vie-long-professional-horsehair-with-custom-handle.html
the model in the picture is actually a 13061m. you might also look at http://www.bullgooseshaving.net/vibubeinnaho.html I believe that this has the same knot as the 13061m, or http://www.bullgooseshaving.net/vijpeedhohab.html.
Really?! That Turkish Horse hair brush is crazy cheap $2.50 or something. You prefer this one over the Vie long..amazed. Funny thing about shaving supplies, a low cost doesn't necessarily equate with poor performance...
I think thats the 12601 that I have with the butterscotch handle. I like the red top/white bottom handle on the 13o61M....
The #6 are good as long as you get a good one. Unfortunately bestshave doesn't have the best QC all the time. I will say that I've gotten several #6's and only one was a little thin on the hair, but still makes a pretty good lather. I figured for the price it worth taking a shot and I wound up loving the brush....
Just a question for anyone who cares to answer: I got a horsehair brush from Vie Long and didn't like it at all. The handle was beautiful, but the horse hair was scratchy. This is maybe not the right word, but it wasn't soft and smooth on the face. I've got some great boar brushes and they are soft to the touch while also having some backbone. The horse hair wasn't that gentle. It felt like it had a little needle imbedded it it that would poke me. I quit using it and am currently saving the handle to use in building another brush. So, I'm wondering if this is true with all horse hair brushes or should I give them another try. I am perfectly satisfied with my Omega and Semogue brushes. They are exceptionally good brushes and don't ever scratch. But, a man's curiousity never ceases.....
It can take a while to come from Turkey. What I do with bestshave is order it and then forget it and suddenly it appears, like Christmas.. I hope you enjoy your #6 Horse as much as I enjoy mine...
