Finished "Shorty" ...

I have been shaving for almost 2 months with the Feather AC "system", and recently spend a whole week shaving with only traditional str8 razors (4x different razors). I found the "regular length" of about 3" a bit long, and I prefer the non-folding handle, so I decided to work with a GD blank and try making my own razor.

I started with a GD, and I carefully grind it down to make it into a "shorty" of about 2.3" long:

I then took a rod of Titanium (6al-4v) and used some scans of the CJB and Japanese SS as a guide:

To give the epoxy a good mechanical hold to the Ti, I partially threaded the rod:

I then milled the two flats on the rod:

I then milled some thin grooves on both sides to provide grip:

I cut some grooves on the blade, so that it would provide mechanical grip to the threads in the handle:

I then cut two more grooves in the handle (both sides) for a little bit more grip, and then epoxied the two parts together:

Here is how it looks right now (scans in the bottom, original Ti rod on top):

I have now been shaving with it 6 days in a row, and I really like it. The grip is solid/secure, the weight (slightly handle heavy) is good, and the short blade is easier for me to maneuver. I already have some ideas for making a second one, so it has been a great learning experience.

Very nice. I have a couple Gold Dollars and find them to be fine, comfortable razors. Man, your set up to tinker to your hearts content, nice equipment. When you going to start making your own brush handles? Just curious, are you a one hand shaver or two?

    Thank you guys :)

I have Titanium in stock in two diameters to make a prototype brush handle (also have a Silver Tip knot waiting), and for making a threaded DE handle. I just need to try to find time to work on them.

Been quite awhile since I have seen them done, or done one myself, they do have that Kamisori feel without having to have the Asymetrical blade..

I really like the machining you did :happy096:

Very fine razor. My GD custom is one of my favorite razors. I am currently working on a set of newspaper mircata scales and will post pics when complete.
